Back with a Monday morning vibe from a DJ and producer you should know - @al-smith

From Ireland, Al Smith traces his roots back to the early 1990s in Waterford, cutting his teeth during the formative years of the Irish underground. After establishing himself in the local club and party scene, a move to Dublin saw him becoming a fixture in the city’s thriving Techno landscape, frequently appearing at the acclaimed D1 Recordings nights.

His sound is a blend of various house and techno, heavily influenced by the high-tech soul of artists such as Carl Craig, Kenny Larkin, Drexciya, and Dan Curtin to name a few. While he spent his early twenties honing his craft in the studio, a recent five-year resurgence has seen him return to production with renewed energy.

We first met Al from his release earlier this year with @chateauchepere ("a near perfect deep house EP" called Sounds and Shapes) but he's also released on international imprints including Downbeat (Spain), Chubby (Australia) and D1 (Ireland). He also shares the passion with his twin brother and acclaimed producer Leonid (Sistrum, Dolly). This mix for 5 Mag is a reflection of a life spent immersed in the deep, rhythmic traditions of the underground.

Certain tracks have an aura, you can feel them coming before you hear them. GE-OLOGY's remix of "Lake Shore Dr" is like that. House music legend Eddie Amador and Di Saronno team up for OUR MISSION, a banging cut of mad horns and peak hour grooves aimed squarely at the dance floor for SoSure Music.

Di Saronno @disaronnomusic and Eddie Amador @eddieamador have been collaborating for several years on various productions and remixes. The seeds for this single grew from a white label that Di Saronno found while digging records at a store in a Johannesburg. It turned out to be one of Eddie's tracks which they have subsequently reproduced together and added a new contemporary twist.

This is a 2012 5 Mag mix from the legendary DJ Dan. It's one of a number of mixes that were either struck off SoundCloud during that dark era or which were never uploaded here. This was the first "DJ Masters Series" mix and there would be only one other — I made up the whole series just to get a mix from DJ Dan. His mixtapes had been so influential in my own life that it was something of a sidequest to have one that said "5 Mag" on it.

There was an interview that went with it too, and it's worth reading for some of Dan's views on his legacy:

"Funky Tekno Tribe was run by two friends of mine (which I introduced) and our concept was to bring the most funky psychedelic music to the Bay Area rave scene.

"The original parties started in San Francisco and were very elaborate in decor and always had the best sound systems. The decor was very tribal and organic… like you were in the middle of the jungle somewhere with really fucked up, funky music that you did not hear at any other parties. We chose our DJs well and everyone understood that we were bringing the most underground, even experimental music to our parties. This was our baby and we wanted it to be 100% our vision. That’s why the parties became so popular, people knew we were always going to be bringing something new and fresh every time and we were always consistent.

"Funky Tekno Tribe was the first one to ever bring Daft Punk to America and I remember that being a huge thing in San Francisco because at the time, I was really pushing a very psychedelic disco sound and I had been playing their unreleased tracks on acetate months before they came out. Josh Wink, DJ Sneak and Mark Farina were also some of our favorite guests. We had so many great parties and every dj played their heart out, that is what I remember most about the Funky Tekno Tribe parties… the true spirit of the Underground!"

RIP Dan

Our SYNC series of classic mixes that vanished off the internet continues with the third mix in this series from Paul Johnson, this one a 5 Mag original. A reader named Anthony alerted us to this mix's disappearance from the internet last year — an email that pretty much lead to the start of this series.

This was originally posted a few days before Christmas in December 2010 as part of 5 Mag's New Mix Monday series. Paul always came through with a request and was able to drop a mix like this at a moment's notice, sometimes starting up the turntables when he was still on the phone. This is the soulful side of Paul Johnson in full effect.

The mix disappeared from the internet sometime around 2016, first in the Great SoundCloud Purges, then a server move and is restored here for the first time since.
