Like so many artists, we discovered @hennaonna 's music for the first time on David Nichols' @closertotruth label — her gorgeous and sophisticated Midori no Basho EP, released just over a year ago. Based in Yerevan, Armenia, Henna has also released stand-out tracks on labels including Nite Grooves, Kindisch, Lisztomania and more.

Though impressed by her productions, we never heard her DJ. And then we heard her mix, and we were sold on it. Henna has a dope sound — that deep and warm deep house vibe that fits so well with our Sanctify mix series.

This is the cover mix from 5 Mag Issue 213, featuring Laurent Garnier, Petals In Sound and more, and out now ⚡️

🌅 Rise and shine it's time for more house music ☀️ Our latest mix is a warm & beautiful set from Anna Schreit for 5 Mag's weekly RISE series

Anna Schreit @anna-maria-schreit was born and raised in Berlin, into a family of a musician who exposed her to a diverse range of music genres from a very young age. Her father's art rock band was one of her earliest influences, shaping her understanding of music and its various forms.

Despite living in a beloved techno city in Europe, it was actually during a trip to Munich that Anna was introduced to the world of electronic music. It was here that she discovered the exotic sounds of house music, which proved to be a turning point for her musical journey. After falling in love with the endless possibilities of house music, Anna began DJing in 2012 to share the tracks she had collected and built up over the years. Her goal was to create immersive experiences and take her listeners on unique journeys through her sets.

Anna Schreit's latest release is Duck EP, her first for the legendary Compost Records — a "warm and funky soulful three track" EP, each of which are dedicated to one of the three bookers at Berlin's Sisyphos where Anna is one of the club's valued regular DJs:

Jillian X @jillianx is a house DJ and event curator based in Chicago and co-founder of Stylin' Out Network. A dancefloor queen with punchy, bangin’ house beats that don’t stop, her style blends deep house, garage, and Chicago jackin' vibes. An intense love for all styles of house music combined with a never-ending search for that ultimate track is what motivates her sets. Jillian X has DJ’d throughout Chicago at Le Nocturne, Celeste, Emporium, Sleeping Village, Virgin Hotels, Arbella, Nine Bar, Logan11, Brunchlox, and My House Music Fest. She has curated events for Red Bull Dance Your Style, Silver Room Block Party, Sleeping Village, The Whistler and Elastic Arts, among others.

About this mix:

"I wanted to celebrate the sounds that I bring to my monthly Dance Planet residency at Emporium," in Logan Square every 4th Saturday, she says. "Growing up in the 90’s in NJ, I was exposed to early club and house tracks often played on the radio, and while I didn’t then know their origins in Chicago, I always knew how those tracks made me feel, and they still make me feel the same way to this day!! It’s peak energy vibes, incorporating influence from Chicago and Jersey, mixing deep n soulful house with some high octane club bangers."

This mix is part of 5 Mag's RISE series, a weekly DJ mix series created because missed the fun of a weekly DJ mix series.

Black Sjuan is a DJ and producer with deep, deep roots in the Chicago house music scene.

For the last three years we've been reviewing his records under this alias, on his own label Assylum Effort & on Chicago's seminal Fresh Meat Records. In addition to the amazing interview with him (which will be coming later this week), he put together our cover mix for #5mag212.

It's all, he says "very Chicago. I use a lot of tracks from Chicago people, a lot of Chicago people that I really admire" in this mix.

"My mix is just riddled with secret messages. If you notice I use a lot of antiphony in my mixes — meaning I find tracks that are like a call and response. I make the tracks talk back and forth. That's just my style. A lot of DJs don't like that because they think it's too showy or the DJ is doing too much.

"Personally, I feel like the track itself is not the final product. The mix is the final product. And I will even take it further to say that the blend itself is the final product. And that's not necessarily the case for everybody. A lot of people just wanna show up, play their tracks and highlight their own tracks. I'm a big fan of Spencer Kincy, so I just like to take tracks and make new tracks out of 'em. I like to remix them right in front of you when I'm DJing live. So that's how I am on the mix.

"But if you listen to this mix, there are double entendres. I don't know if you noticed the first double entendre, but the first track is called 'Orientation.' It happens to be a favorite track of mine. But 'Orientation' is at the beginning of the mix, the beginning of my mix, the beginning of knowing who Black Sjuan is.

"As the track goes on, it blends into Derrick Carter's 'Where U At?' So from 'Orientation' to 'Where U At?' You get it? I do that in all my tracks and all my mixes. There's nothing less than a double entendre. There's always at least a double entendre.

"That's just how I am — all my stuff has to mean something. It drives people crazy sometimes but it all means something."
