Giant Arm is designed to be a showcase for Noncompliant's "signature style of raw, uncompromising techno." Momentum Shift features four tracks that tick every box on that checklist — the rhythmic, radical and raw sound of Midwest techno crafted by one of our most essential artists.

🎙 Noncompliant - Raised in small-town Indiana on a musical diet of 80s synth pop and punk rock, Noncompliant soon found barnyard raves and warehouse techno parties and (as DJ Shiva) quickly became a fixture of the fabled 90s Midwest USA rave scene. Now, almost three decades and a name change later, she is at the top of her techno game. She was recognized as one of Mixmag's Top 20 Breakthrough DJs in 2017 and has performed at renowned venues like Berghain and Tresor in Berlin, Smartbar in Chicago, and DeSchool in Amsterdam. She has also appeared at festivals such as Unsound and Movement Detroit. Noncompliant's releases and remixes on labels like Valence, Flash, Outerworld, and Dark Entries have made waves in the global music scene, with her track "Women's Work" even landing on Fiedel's official Berghain 08 mix and his label Fiedeltwo. In 2023, she is launching her own label called Giant Arm, which features her signature style of raw, uncompromising techno.

🎙 Black Eyes - Hailing from Manchester, Black Eyes excels as a producer but "is at heart primarily a DJ, and always will be." Heavily influenced by the likes of Mike Huckaby (to whom Hydro Trip Vol 1 is dedicated), Walt J, Omar S and Norm Talley, Black Eyes was a 7 year resident with NTS radio before moving to Berlin in 2022.

"The reason I make the records I make is mostly to play them in my DJ sets," Belgian-born DJ Gratts tells 5 Mag in this issue's interview.

"That doesn't mean they need to be dancefloor tracks. I play a lot of slower, mellower, weirder, deeper stuff out."

"I am obsessed with tracks that work in different environments. That is true class to me: music that works in a club but that also has enough depth to be played on the radio or in a bar."

Gratts' cover mix is "a mixed bag of tracks I've been playing lately. A couple of bits of my own thrown in for good measure. Some CD digs. Some double copy action. The last track of the mix is a bit of an oddball '80s Aussie jam I've been playing.

"This is very much what it would sound like if you hear me play."

Continuing to showcase the deep flow of talent emerging from the underground, 5 Mag features Chicago's M-Dok (Tribe, My House Music Festival) for this week's Monday morning RISE mix.

M-Dok, born Marcus Elston, is a DJ and producer hailing from Chicago, Illinois. M-Dok's journey in music began in the summer of 2008 when he and his peers started hosting underground warehouse parties and weekly house parties in Pilsen. M-Dok's festival event, My House, is known for contextualizing the city's heritage for a young and enthusiastic crowd by putting new acts alongside established legends.

With over 15 years of experience in the craft of DJing and curating music, M-Dok has DJed amongst legends and superstar DJs in various genres such as house, hip-hop, and Latino. He has helped direct and coordinate shows for well-known Chicago festivals such as My House Music Fest, Chicago Michelada, Pilsen Taco Fest, and the team that brought Don Omar and Ivy Queen to Chicago.

Pushing through a global pandemic, she stayed relevant by regularly streaming with her Chicago residency SHFFT. She also found time to get into the studio, putting out two original productions, “Rock the Vote,” self released in the fall of 2020 and “Falling Up” a collab with her SHFFT colleague Shmoo, released on Chicago legend Ron Carroll’s digital imprint Electric Disco in summer of 2022.

🎧 Shmoo @shmoochicago Known for his successful You Are Here series with Derrick Carter at Chicago's legendary Spybar as well as his groundbreaking studio work with Gramaphone's Garrett David, Shmoo launched the leading-edge SHFFT multimedia project as a way to stay active during the global club shutdown. He has also held residencies at Berlin Nightclub, Copa Lounge, East Room, Electric Hotel, Estate, and the infamous Tanto’s. Shmoo’s debut EP on the seminal Love Notes From Brooklyn label has sold out at record stores around the world and has received support from Honey Dijon on BBC Radio 1. He has also been invited as a featured guest on DJ Heather's CHI FI SHOW Twitch live stream. Shmoo's remix of Mack Blagic by Groovy Drew on Jason Merle's 4E&A imprint has received support from Carl Cox among others.

🎧 Ardio Zemog began playing and producing music in high school while playing for Salsa and Latin Jazz bands. He  started to DJ and produce electronic when he moved to New York in 2011. Since then he has been making a name for himself in the underground electronic music scene. In 2018, he officially started releasing music as himself and other aliases (DJ Mas Corazon, Calambre, Kold Kutz, Boogadisco).

Brian Gardner has done just about everything in the Chicago scene you could possible imagine. He worked as a buyer at vinyl emporia Hot Jams, Hip House and WaxADDICT, threw parties, put on young and aspiring DJs, brought in tastemakers for their first gigs abroad, made tracks and played even more tracks at venues from Boom Boom Room and Smartbar to his own Soul Foundation events. Now based in Vegas, he's released music on Housepit Chi, Farris Wheel Recordings, Minuendo Recordings (Spain), RealDEEP Recordings, Thought Records & remixes on Black Error Recordings (SA) and his own imprint Soul Foundation Recordings.

5 Mag's RISE series features a new mix from Littlelake, co-founder of Leipzig, Germany-based label Brombért Records.

Brombért is a "platform for electronic dance music styles of all kinds and is characterized by a special music selection and idiosyncratic appearance. Brombért releases analog and digital. Each release should ideally be different and surprising from the previous one. Because it is the moments of surprise that make club nights unforgettable."

Littlelake says the "release plan may not be very promising from a commercial point of view, but that is not what Brombért is about. Brombért records stand for themselves, independent of any market trends. This can also be seen in the covers, which are handmade screen-printings show only a picture by the graphic artist Zatina Kessl. In this way, the cover image is recognized as a work of art in its own right, without any written information to distract from it. Music and cover are given equal space, but at the same time this also results in an inseparable unity."

This mix is a selection of old and new favorites giving an overview of "the range of music that could be released on Brombért Records.
