Poveglia Island, ItalyDeath was so rampant on Poveglia Island that it's said nearly 50% of the topsoil on the island is made up of human remains.The first mention of this place was in 421, when people fled to it in order to escape the barbarian invasions. Since then, it's been both occupied and abandoned several times. By 1776, Poveglia became the jurisdiction of the Public Health Office.
