El Metzo invited only the best of the best voices to join him on his nightly talk show METZ HERE. Occasionally a legend would have to cancel on Metz, who famously never invited them a second time after an initial rejection.

Little noticed afternoon weasel Terry Meiners begged the king of local radio to allow him to sit in the corner for one of Milton's legendary Off The Wall Gang roundtable shows.

It worked. Kind of.

When Dan Burgess left WLRS to become a news anchor for WHAS, Terry Meiners was pushed into joining the LRS102 morning show with Ron Clay. 

It was 1981. Clay and Burgess had just begun to get noticed for irreverent comedy and WLRS wanted to heighten the buzz. 

The combination of Clay and Meiners took a few weeks to gel. Local writers took notice, published a few positive reviews, and then the show became the talk of the town.

Here is audio of the early coupling of Clay and Meiners before they started producing recorded bits. The humor was there, now it just needed fresh publicity.

Within the next 6 months, they would switch stations from WLRS to upstart rival rock station WQMF. Everyone noticed and Ron and Terry's Show With No Name was off and running.

Early in the Terry Meiners radio career, he spoke with a mellow tone on WKQQ. This aircheck is from Saturday, December 30, 1978 during the Weekend Block Party format (3 in a row from the same artist).

There is additional audio of deejay Kathy Stamps, who spoke with a similarly mellow tone. The program director wanted all of us to speak in this fashion so as to avoid "harshing the buzz" of listeners.  True story.

The Duke of Louisville Bill Bailey was coerced out of retirement to fill in for vacationing Terry Meiners. Bailey dominated Louisville radio ratings in the late 60s and most of the 70s on WAKY, WCII, and WKLO.

It was exceedingly cool to have the Duke show up for a week at WHAS Radio to spin yarns and reconnect with listeners.

Wally took a cold shower to overcome the effects of a bad narcotic as a Good Samaritan arrived with pantsless Ward Cleaver, nursing a head wound and repeatedly shouting BEAVER! BEAVER! BEAVER!

Ward doesn't recognize June, the boys are scared, and soon financial struggles will rain down upon the idyllic Cleaver household.

For the year leading up WHAS Radio's 100th birthday, Wayne Perkey talked about his life, family, and career at WHAS and elsewhere.

Wayne was originally asked to lead off the series in the summer of 2021 but he wanted to wait until his birthday week the next January. He would be turning 84 and loved the symmetry with the station's frequency. Perkey came to WHAS in 1970 to jump start it from a middle-of-the-road format to a faster paced talk and rock music format.

Here's the interview recorded on January 14, 2021. Wayne was his chipper, vibrant self but was fighting COVID at the time. He was acting as a caregiver for his longtime wife Jane Anne when he contracted COVID and ultimately succumbed to it.
