Sam Pilisi is the Manager Outreach for student support services at AUT.  However while he has been in lock down Sam has been looking for ways to serve the community that saw him delivering packages to families.

Most people are using time in lockdown for tiktok videos, 25 push-up challenges, family zoom meetings and finding ways to occupy their time.

Sam Pilisi took up a slightly different challenge to raise money for Auckland families affected by COVID-19. 12 hours on an exer-cycle, a support team in the bubble and motivation to raise funds for 360 Tautua  to provide food for others.

Beril Kustao was born and raised in a tiny beautiful island called Rotuma. She went on for further education at the Usp,laucala Campus in Suva. Beril left the island paradise of Rotuma in 2005 and hasn't had the chance to go back to ever since. In 2012, Beril's  family moved to Christchurch now residing in Kirwee.

Beril Lal is the Treasurer of the Canterbury Rotuman Community – a small group of Rotumans residing in theCanterbury area who share a unique culture, identity and language. Being able to connect with other Rotumans here to nurture and uphold our culture and language is a marvelous experience – from being able to teach some young members the Rotuman Language or even just by looking out for each fellow Rotuman.”

This morning on Pacific Breakfast, we continue our Talanoa Ako series from the Ministry of education, to help our Pasifika families to champion our children's education. This morning we look at Time management & Family Planning.

The New Zealand Principals' Federation represents approximately 2000 principals from the education sector.

The Federation, which was first established in 1982, provides support and a professional voice for members throughout New Zealand, also information and professional resources, as well as a number of publications and a helpline. 

Joining me now on Pacific Breakfast this morning is Perry Rush, President of the NZ Principals Federation & principal at Hastings intermediate, to talk about how schools across the country have been coping during COVID-19.

Our pacific queen Maria Fuata is the Chair  of the NZ Rotuman Fellowship Group (NZRF). 

The national group is made up of 4 sub-groups NZRF-Wellington, NZRF-Waikato, NZRF-Auckland and NZRF-Mairani.

NZ Rotuman Fellowship, together with Canterbury Rotuman Community and Kainaga Fitness are working with the Ministry for Pacific Peoples in this first Rotuman Language week as part of the Language Week series in Aotearoa.

Auimatagi Tunumafono, Lafaitele Ken Ah Kuoi, is a Barrister and Solicitor. Born in Samoa attended Avele College and is a Victoria University alumni.

He runs his own law firm in Kilbirnie Wellington with a focus on general practice, supporting Pacific people especially Samoans with their unmet legal needs. 

Auimatagi Runs a law programme, Utulalaga on Samoa Capital Radio and PMN in the Samoa language. He is Deputy Chairperson SCR.  President MSP Rugby Club. Keen rugby player and a golf enthusiast.

We’re joined on Pacific Breakfast now by Dr El-Shadan Tautolo, Director of our Pacific Islands families Study at AUT South Campus in Auckland, for an update on the PIF study & new initiative: AUT Pacific Language Video Series – Adapting to a changing world, shaping resilient futures.

Dr Monica Liva  has been working as a general practitioner for 8 years, having worked across a range of health services including Middlemore Hospital, Waikato Hospital, West Fono, the Whanau Ora Community Clinic and the Auckland South Correctional Facility - Wiri Prison. She is now based at Turuki Healthcare in South Auckland.

Monica was born and raised in New Zealand. She is of Samoan and Niuean descent and has lived in Mangere for over 30 years.

Monica set out to break the stereotype that Pacific people cannot achieve a degree. She succeeded, graduating from the Auckland University in 2006 with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery. She also completed her fellowship in 2014.

Outside of work Monica enjoys social soccer, CrossFit, Netflix and taking her 4 young children to exercise at the park. She is passionate about seeing Pasifika patients get the best possible care!
