Targeted deportation of Pacific people from New Zealand in the 1970s was the subject of a special debate at Parliament yesterday afternoon.
The Dawn Raids, so called because they often took place before sunrise, resulted in the deportation and prosecution of Pacific Islanders who were staying in New Zealand illegally, despite the majority of overstayers at the time being British or American.
The debate followed a petition which was opened on 17 May 2021 calling for the House of Representatives to:
urge the Government to apologise for the Dawn Raids
hold a special debate to acknowledge and reflect on the Dawn Raids
set up a legacy fund to allow education about them to continue
The petition was presented to the House on 23 June this year.
One of the instigators of the petition was Benji Timu and he shares what led him down the pathway to social justice.
