Survivors of abuse from the Pacific community will give evidence before the Abuse in Care Royal Commission of Inquiry at an upcoming public hearing, 'Tulou - Our Pacific Voices: Tatala e Pulonga'. Experts will also give evidence.

The public hearing, starting on Monday 19 July, will open with a traditional Pacific ceremony and be held at Fale o Samoa in Māngere, Auckland. See below for the witness list and full schedule.

Growing up in South Auckland, Jack Scanlan never saw himself as one day being an academic doing pioneering research about the tough community and life experiences that shaped him.

From a close to 30-year career spanning university education and working at the frontline with at-risk youth through the police, Oranga Tamariki and Te Whānau o Waipareira Trust specialising in youth justice, he is the first Pacific doctoral candidate confirmed into Massey’s Doctor of Social Work programme ­– the only one of its kind in Aotearoa. The degree (not to be confused with a Doctor of Philosophy or PhD) has equivalents in science and education, requiring a thesis that draws on a lifetime of work experience and research.

Mr Scanlan’s thesis, Ululaau: Exploring the transformational journeys of Samoan social practitioners who were former youth-at-risk to better understand effective ways to reduce Samoan youth offending, is named after and inspired by his late mother, Ululaau. And he is one of the “former youth-at-risk” also mentioned in the title. His research reflects his strong view that social work practices need to be based on indigenous knowledge, transformational change as well as community experiences and values in order to be truly effective.

This week we are celebrating Solomon Islands Language Week here in Aotearoa.  Te Papa is joining in bringing cultural performances and storytelling from Poneke members of the Solomon Islands community who will take us on a journey to the Hapi Isles of the Pacific diaspora this Sunday.

Last week Luke Mealamu of Mealamu Security,  posted on his FB page about an incident, involving him & members being assaulted in the early hours of Sunday morning 4th July in Manukau. Luke was the victim of a Coward punch. 

This follows recent incidents such as the death of up & coming MMA fighter Fau Vake in May, who died in hospital after he was hit from behind on Symonds Street on 16 May, along with a number of incidents over recent years involving “Cowards punch”. 

The Crimes (Coward Punch Causing Death) Amendment Bill, was introduced in September 2018 and was defeated in Parliament on 17 June 2020.
