A year ago the Mika family were faced with adversity following the loss of their nine year old son Josiah to a rare form of epilepsy.   

The family has found a way to rise above adversity, exuberate resilience, flourish and shine together.  On Saturday night family and friends gathered for the launch of the Rise & Shine-Josiah Mika Foundation.

The winner of this year’s Ahuwhenua Young Māori Farmer Award for dairy is Quinn Morgan. Quinn is 26 years old and this is his first season of farming working as a Farm Assistant for Sam and Kate Moore on their 155ha farm in Otakiri near Whakatane. 

Quinn Morgan, who is working his first season on a dairy farm was awarded this years Ahuwhenua Young Māori Farmer Award at a gala dinner in New Plymouth on Friday.

The award was set up in 2012 and is designed to recognise up and coming young Māori in the sheep beef, horticulture and dairy sectors.

Elizabeth Mc Ewan was amongst protesters clutching placards who rallied in Greenlane calling on authorities to save the Laura Fergusson Trust.  The Trust supports young disabled people with physical and neurological impairments.

Its rehabilitation centre has been providing treatment from its home and respite care unit for almost half a century, so young people with disabilities don't have to be confined in rest homes.

But the Trust closed the facility under a cloud of secrecy last year, outraging those families who depended on the service.

We have a new, but still disputed, winner for Samoa’s general elections with Samoa’s Supreme Court yesterday ruling the addition of a woman Member of Parliament after the election count, as unconstitutional, effectively giving the opposition FAST party a one seat majority over the caretaker HRPP party and making a second election unnecessary.

 

The caretaker Prime Minister has vowed to take a case to the Court of Appeal.
