Floris Niu returned to her ancestral land in Samoa seven years ago, following a series of life-threatening illnesses including cervical cancer.

This followed two decades of being in a corporate job in New Zealand where she made good money, yet felt she wasn’t getting anywhere.

Floris Niu is the founder of Ms Sunshine Farms which is her cacao plantation and is building an agro-tourism market from it.  She is the co-founder of SWAG, Samoa Women’s Association of Growers, an NGO raising the voices of women in Agriculture in Samoa.

A public consultation Proposals for a Smokefree Aotearoa 2025 Action Plan, is currently underway until 5pm, 31 May 2021, being run by the Ministry of Health.

Although the number of smokers is declining, Pacific Peoples still have the second highest rates of smoking in New Zealand.

Next to Māori, Pacific communities are the most impacted from the harm that smoking tobacco causes.

CensusAtSchool New Zealand - TataurangaKiTeKura Aotearoa last week celebrated the launch of their tenth biennial survey to once again comprehensively chart children’s views of their own lives. The large national survey will give another intriguing glimpse into school children’s lives.

CensusAtSchool New Zealand - TataurangaKiTeKura Aotearoa, is a non-profit, online educational project that aims to bring statistics to life in both English and Māori-medium classrooms. It is run by the Department of Statistics at the University of Auckland in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Stats NZ.

KaSeki, are a throwback to the Samoan string bands of the past and with their influences deeply rooted in church and tradition, have used this platform to perform some of the hymns and songs of yesteryear made popular amongst Samoan communities and artists across the globe.

Home to a range of sports, the new $6.4 million Ngāti Ōtara Park Multi-sport Centre opened last Saturday 8 May, now offering local talent world class space with modern equipment to train on.

Five sports and more than 100 teams will now enjoy the facilities. Auckland Council salutes the local people who over a long period have worked towards this day and is proud to have contributed to the achievement of this great new complex. Auckland Mayor Phill Goff said.

One of the officials in attendance at the opening over the weekend is the new Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board chairperson Apulu Reece Autagavaia who says it’s a big moment for the community.

As with Rugby clubs around the country, Christchurch-based Linwood Rugby Club, which was established in 1886, felt the impacts of COVID-19 in 2020. Since the pandemic, the club has suffered a loss of membership, has had many community events cancelled, while families and communities have felt isolated.

Over recent times the club has had an increasing number of Pacific people becoming involved in the club.

As a result, earlier this year, the Linwood Club Committee reached out and successfully applied for the Ministry for Pacific People’s Community COVID-19 Fund, for a number of initiatives to support & reflect the growing diversity of the club.
