The Ara Education Charitable Trust works with young people in their final year of school to enhance their employability when they enter the workforce.

They are currently working with young Pasifika women to help them secure careers in construction through their Pasifika Women in Construction project. 

We’re joined now by Sarah Edmond & Luseane Akau from The Ara Education Charitable Trust. Sarah is the project manager who is passionate about helping young Pasifika women into a career in construction. 

Luseane Akau, is the Cadet Facilitator at Ara Education Charitable Trust. She works hands-on with the young girls in order to give them the exposure to the various opportunities within the construction industry.

Herman Loto also known by his stage name of Ermehn is one of the original members of the Otara Millionaires Club, often referred to as the Godfather of South Auckland hip hop who’s been a part of the New Zealand music scene for over 25 years with music inspired by his first hand experience of gang-life growing up in South Auckland.  

 

Nowadays Herman Loto is based in Western Australia where he’s been for the three years working as an MMA and Muaythai coach.

 

He is the father of Wallabies and Reds player Lukhan Salakaia-Loto and also father of sixteen year old Rhyme The Rage Loto with over 40 fights who he’s helped train.

"Eric Soakai is a Performance Artist based out of South Auckland. From Poutasi, Falealili in Samoa on his Mother's side, and Ha'ato'u, Ha'apai in Tonga. An award winning poet, Eric was the 2019 National Slam Poetry Champion of New Zealand, the 2018 Grounded Slam Champion and has placed well in many other competitions. His work has also been published in Oscen Magazine and will soon be published in the Knowledge Makers Journal Volume V. His work focuses on exploration of Self, family and culture."   

 

Eric is going to be performing at the Auckland Writers Festival as part of the line-up for Auckland Speaks II which is going to be at the Centre this Wednesday.

 

He will perform alongside other local poets, storytellers and rappers including award-winning Samoan poet, orator and indigenous activist Aigagalefili Fepulea’i Tapua’i and 2017 NZ Poetry Slam Champion, poet, educator, TedEx speaker Samoan Daisy Lavea-Timo aka Daisy Speaks.

Full Circle: South Dakota & Samoa is a new book by Jackie Fa’asisila, who has lived in Samoa now for over 45 years.  

Jackie was born and raised in rural America but moved to inner city Kansas City in the late 1960’s to attend university. This opened the door to a bigger world, and she accepted Peace Corps’ invitation to develop curriculum in Western Samoa where she not only fell in love with the communal culture of Samoa but also a young Samoan chief. 

The book documents her changing personal perspectives against the backdrop of Samoa’s development and natural disasters. It describes both happy times and sad ones, like the premature death of her husband shortly after their twentieth wedding anniversary. Her tales of love, loss and dealing with responsibilities for an extended family shape the decades of her life.

Her reflections explore the realities of cross-cultural learning and illustrate how Samoa has been etched in her psyche.

Concerns have been raised following the dissolution of the Counties Manukau Basketball Association.  The future of three associations that come under the management of the Auckland Basketball Services Limited is uncertain now they have lost their charitable status and capacity to apply for funding.
