Richard Pamatatau is an AUT Journalism academic who has been a journalist for more than twenty years, including stints as Radio New Zealand’s Pacific Issues Correspondent and as deputy editor to NZ Info Tech Weekly and a contributor to the The New Zealand Herald.

The inaugural Moana Nui Festival is set to be held at the Forsyth Barr Stadium this coming Saturday and we are taking some time to talk with stall holders and community leaders.

Joining us on the line we have Ilai Elekana Manu who will be showcasing fagatua, traditional Tokelauan wrestling at the festival and his wife Kim Pavihi Talamahina who has been helping to coordinate the Niuean community stall.

Nicola was appointed Banking Ombudsman in August 2015. She has over 20 years’ experience in dispute resolution, including four as Deputy Banking Ombudsman. 

She has a law degree from Victoria University and a Masters of Public Health from Boston University. Nicola was previously the Chief Legal Advisor at the Office of the Health and Disability Commissioner and has worked in private practice. She has published and presented on dispute resolution in New Zealand and abroad.  Nicola is a consultant for the World Bank and on the board of FinCap and Malaghan

Dr Tarcisius Kabutaulaka is an Associate Professor and Director of the Center for Pacific Islands Studies at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. He is a political scientist with research interests on geopolitics, international interventions, regionalism, governance, natural resources and economic development and political developments in Oceania. 

He has a PhD from the Australian National University and undergraduate and MA degrees from the University of the South Pacific. He joined UHM in 2009. Prior to that, he worked at the East-West Center and previously at USP. Kabutaulaka is from Solomon Islands. 

To share with us his thoughts on the decision by the Micronesian countries to withdraw from the Pacific Island Forum expressing their disappointment with the process which led to the the appointment of the former Cook Islands Prime Minister Henry Puna as the Forums new secretary general over Micronesia’s candidate Gerald Zackios during a marathon online meeting of Pacific leaders last week.

Va’atele Education Consulting holds a number of Ministry of Education contracts, including the Pasifika Early Literacy Project (PELP), the Pasifika Teacher Aide Project (PTAP) and the Research Project for Tautai o Le Moana (ToLM).

All of these projects are focused on supporting centre and school tautai/leaders, kaiako/teachers, and kaiawhina/teacher aides to privilege and utilise linguistically and culturally sustaining/revitalising pedagogies within their learning spaces.

This morning we have Dr Rae Si’ilata who is the Director of Va’atele Education Consulting who has been a teacher, school leader, facilitator, lecturer, and consultant in Aotearoa and the Pacific for many years. She joins us to talk about the work they do and the benefits of bilingual learning.

The Moana Nui Festival will be an opportunity for Dunedin to explore, experience and celebrate the cultures of local Pacific communities.  There will be performances, food stalls, craft stalls and more this coming Saturday.  This is the first time Moana Nui Festival will be held and to tell us more about what they have planned, festival coordinator/organiser Stacey Kokaua.

Akomai Heritage was established by the Tongan women's fellowship of St. John Uniting Congregations Avalon Unite dChurch HCUC Parish. They are based in the Hutt Valley region, and are invested in learning and sharing cultural practises, ensuring that Tongan knowledge is passed on.

Since 2017, Akomai Heritage have been engaged in making ngatu, Tongan bark cloth. In the past they have made koloa (cultural treasures) such as kato teu (ceremonial baskets), monomono (ceremonial blankets) and kiekie (waist overskirt worn in formal occasions).

Akomai Heritage held an exhibition at Te Papa which was officially opened Friday evening and joining us on the line this morning is one of the founders Kaufo’ou Taulata.

Ana Lavekau joined the British Army in 2006 at the very late age of 28, initially as a Chef.  After returning from her first tour to Afghan in 2008 Ana was then given the green light to transfer as a HR Specialist.  

 

This led to her second tour to Afghan in 2010 where she felt she was not alone as her younger brother also deployed with this regiment.

 

After spending 9 Years actively working as a HR Specialist, Ana finally decided to make a move to PR/Media Relations for the Army.  

 

Ane Lavekau is someone who feels very connected to the art and culture of her Fijian heritage, having been raised by strong Fijian women in Rewa Province in central Fiji.  

 

Ana Lavekau now champions Pacific Art, Design and Culture on the platform of London Pacific Fashion Week, where she gathers together fashion designers from the Pacific region in London to coincide with London Fashion Weeks, in order to promote their own brands, and for them to see inside the global fashion industry. 

 

Ana masterminds the events to ensure the widest possible audience is exposed to their work.  Lavekau has represented over 50 designers from all over the world.
