Frank's Intro to "Boys Don't Cry"
“Two years ago I found an image of a kid with her hands covering her face. A seatbelt reached across her torso, riding up her neck and a mop of blonde hair stayed swept, for the moment, behind her ears. Her eyes seemed clear and calm but not blank, the road behind her seemed the same. I put myself in her seat then I played it all out in my head. The claustrophobia hits as the seatbelt tightens, preventing me from even leaning forward in my seat. the pressing on internal organs. I lean back and forward to release it. Then backwards and forward again. There it is—I got free. How much of my life has happened inside of a car? I wonder if the odds are that I’ll die in one. Knock on wood-grain. Shouldn’t speak like that. We live in cars in some cities, commuting across space either for our livelihood, or devouring fossil fuels for joy. It’s close to as much time as we spend in our beds, more for some. The first time I did shrooms, my manager had to come rescue me from Caltech’s ‘Trip Day.’ As I got into her car, I swear to God the aluminum center console in her Porsche truck looked like it was breathing, like the throat of something. On the freeway, leaving Pasadena, we spoke and I looked away, outside, at the wheels and tires of cars doing that optical illusion thing they do where it looks like they’re spinning backwards, which, according to Google, happens because our brains are assuming something completely wrong and showing it to us. Staring, I was transfixed by all the indicator lights oscillating and throbbing against the wind. We drove thru downtown LA headed west, flying on the same freeways I used to run outta gas on. Welcomed in by the perennial creatures, imperial palm trees and climbing vines living their lives out just off the shoulder. The feeling familiar enhanced, on the 10. I used to ride around in my sinewy crossover SUV, smoke and listen to rough mixes of my old shit before it came out, or whatever someone wanted to play when they hooked up their iPhone to the aux cord. A few years and few daily-drivers later I’m not driving much anymore. It’s been a year since I moved to London, at the time of writing this, and there’s no practical reason to drive in this city. I ordered a GT3 RS and it’ll keep low miles out here but I guess it’s good to have in case of emergency :) Raf Simons once told me it was cliché, my whole car obsession. Maybe it links to a deep subconscious straight boy fantasy. Consciously though, I don’t want straight—a little bent is good. I found it romantic, sometimes, editing this project. The whole time I felt as though I was in the presence of a $16m McLaren F1 armed with a disposable camera. My memories are in these pages, places closeby and long ass-numbing flights away. Cruising the suburbs of Tokyo in RWB Porches. Throwing parties around England and mobbing freeways in four project M3S that I built with some friends. Going to Mississippi and playing in the mud with amphibious quads. Street-casting models at a random kung fu dojo out in Senegal. Commissioning life-size toy boxes for the fuck of it. Shooting a music video for fun with Tyrone Lebon, the genius giant. Taking a break/reconnaissance mission to Tulum, Mexico, enjoying some star visibility for a change. Recording in Tokyo, NYC, Miami, LA, London, Paris. Stopping in Berlin to witness Berghain for myself. Trading jewels and soaking in parables with the many-headed Brandon aka BasedGod in conversation. I wrote a story in the middle—It’s called “Godspeed.” It’s basically a reimagined part of my boyhood. Boys do cry, but I don’t think I shed a tear for a good chunk of my teenage years. It’s surprisingly my favorite part of life so far. Surprising, to me, because the current phase is what I was asking the cosmos for when I was a kid. Maybe that part had its rough stretches too, but in my rearview mirror it’s getting small enough to convince myself it was all good. And really though... It’s still all good.

“ok, another one in the can, and before things get too confusing (for us all, as we lose ourselves sometimes, too, what with all the names and websites and groups) let’s stop for a minute and remind ourselves and all of you, our dear readers, what it is exactly that we’re doing.
record by record, piece by piece, etcetera by etcetera, we are building a small fortress. This fortress has been designed to withstand the pummeling of mainstream tidal waves and to keep unwanted characters (“suits”, trend hoppers, et al) outside of its walls. We are in here multiplying, scheming, quietly growing in numbers as well as in quality, when we hit, it will not be violent, nor will it be overly publicized. We are creating a small army of artists that will release works (music, film, visual art, etc) quietly as independently as possible. A record here, a website there, all under the radar, but connected by two things: an independent spirit and a high level of quality (the latter being subjective, of course, but you can’t please all of the people all the time, can you?)

This record you hold in your hands now is the second such test. Please bear with us as we learn right from wrong, good from bad. If you’ve been with us since the release of “a call to arms” maybe you understand a little better what we’re talking about.
on the topic of the latest (and first) bandits of the acoustic revolution record, let’s make something a tad bit clearer. Yes, that is a botar song on this here sm record. look at the two groups as two versions of the same band, each from a different sonic dimension. Both groups will continue to release music, alternatively. We will swap songs and “remix” tunes. Over the course of the next few months/years other “versions” of this collective group will emerge, on various labels or completely independent. Each one will have a unique sound and will play songs that are mostly proprietary to it, but some songs will be shared, since a song, like any other work of art, can go in so many different directions. It’s so difficult to be working on something and have the pressure, upon coming to an artistic fork in the road, to choose between one or two (or more) directions to take that work in. well, to hell with that, we say. fuck it, let’s do what we feel like doing. play it every possible way, swap out a verse here or there, add that violin solo that just wouldn’t work in the punk rock version of this song or that. this is the only way, we’ve come to find, to keep all this exciting and new. there is such a universally accepted blueprint for bands every genre nowadays: get a few musicians together, practive in a basement somewhere, play countless/thankless/unattended-by-anyone-but-the-band-members’-parents shows wherever/whenever they become available, wish, hope and pray to be signed by a label, go on tour, have your ego stroked every night, feel more important than you really are, start mindlessly babbling publicly about the latest, trendiest cause worth dying for (or at least worth playing a benefit concert for, where your ego is still stroked, what a chock), become unpopular, go away for a while and eventually do a reunion tour. and there’s nothing wrong with that. it’s just all so..done before.
so here’s our plan: let’s make music, but really make it, from scratch, on the equipment we buy, borrow or steal, in our homes, with our friends, on our time, finishing each project when we say it’s finished. in this record’s case, everything used to make the music, from the equipment to the mixing time in a real studio to the beverages we consumed while making it was provided by a very generous and timely loan from mr. and mrs. kalnoky. they came to the plate and funded our little project and you’re holding this album because of them (in more ways than one). sure, some compromises were made regarding the group and more will have to be made in the future with all of the groups and all of the major works we put out, but no compromises will be made in regards to the actual music or art or what have you. we will walk away and let it all burn if we are forced to do something we cannot, in good conscience, agree with. what little we have, the little that really matters, is not tangible or physical and it exists not on paper, but somewhere inside. and that little thing, that un-sellable, uncompromising thing i’m babbling about now as the sun is rising outside my window, that’s what this project is about. until next time (sooner than you think, we hope).”

Hi there! I know how hard it is to always be getting letters that ask for some favour or another, so it was not easy for me to accept the job of Lead Patron for a Performing Arts School to be located in my home town, Liverpool.
But, you guessed it! I did agree to do it, so now I’m writing to “friends and all good people” to try and interest them in the scheme.
The story started just after the inner-city riots in Liverpool a few years ago. A friend suggested that “what the city needs is a “Fame” School.”
I liked the idea as a possible positive focus for local and overseas kids, but it was only later when I went back to my own old school that was in ruins, that I thought by locating a Performing Arts Centre there we could save the 1825 building in the process.
So..... (phew!)
We’re now well on our way, as the enclosed info shows, but there’s still a lot to be done.
Now the hard part. A donation from you would be a great boost to the project, and I know your involvement in some way, would be a thrill for everyone concerned.
Hope you didn’t mind me writing this, it’s so long since I’ve written letters I feel like I’m back at school myself.
Anyway, one of these days you’ll have to come and teach a class some moves!!
Who knows, it may turn out to be something special for thousands of future kids.
