  • Deborah Levy - An amorous discourse from the suburbs of hell
    Deborah Levy trained at Dartington College of Arts leaving in 1981 to write a number of plays, highly acclaimed for their "intellectual rigour, poetic fantasy and visual imagination", including Pax, Heresies for the Royal Shakespeare Company, Clam, Call Blue Jane, Shiny Nylon, Honey Baby Middle England, Pushing the Prince into Denmark and Macbeth-False Memories, some of which are published in Levy: Plays 1. Deborah wrote and published her first novel Beautiful Mutants, when she was 27 years old. The experience of not having to give her words to a director, actors and designer to interpret, was so exhilarating, she wrote a few more. These include, Swallowing Geography, The Unloved and Billy and Girl. In 2012 she was nominated for the Booker Prize for Swimming Home. Her most recent work is an essay for Notting Hill Editions: Things I Don’t Want to Know. She has always written across a number of art forms and was Fellow in Creative Arts at Trinity College, Cambridge from 1989-1991.

  • DBC Pierre - The story of Cox
    DBC Pierre was born in 1961 in Reynella, Australia. He was brought up in Mexico and the UK, and now lives in County Leitrim, Ireland. He worked previously as a designer and an internationally published cartoonist and burst onto the literary stage with his debut novel Vernon God Little, a dark satire set in the aftermath of a Texas high school massacre published in 2003. It won the Man Booker Prize and the Whitbread First Novel Award.

    Esther Freud trained as an actress before writing her first novel, Hideous Kinky, which was made into a film starring Kate Winslet. Her other novels include The Sea House, Love Falls and Lucky Break. Her most recent book, Mr Mac and Me is published by Bloomsbury in September 2014. She contributes regularly the newspapers and magazines, and teaches for the Faber Academy. She divides her time between London and Suffolk.

  • Will Self - On doubt
    Will Self began writing fiction after graduating from Oxford University, and worked as a cartoonist for the New Statesman and the London listings magazine City Limits. In 1993 he was chosen as one of Granta’s ‘Best of Young British Novelists’, and his fiction includes the short-story collection The Quantity Theory of Insanity (which won the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize), and novels such as How the Dead Live, Cock and Bull and Umbrella. His non-fiction includes Perfidious Man, featuring photographs by David Gamble, and collections of his journalism such as Junk Mail and Feeding Frenzy. In 2002 he took part in a “reality art” project in a one-bedroom flat on the twentieth floor of a Liverpool tower block, writing a short piece of fiction whilst being watched by the public. He is a regular broadcaster on television and radio, and contributed to numerous newspapers and magazines, writing on various topics including architecture and psychogeography.

  • On poetry and music - Ruth Padel
    Ruth Padel has published ten poetry collections most recently Learning to Make an Oud in Nazareth on creativity and conflict, and is known for her lyrical voice and singing line. Prose books include a study of the influence of Greek myth on rock music and opera, and much-loved works on reading contemporary poetry based on a column she wrote in the Independent on Sunday. She has sung in the Schola Cantorum of Oxford, the choir of St Eustache in Paris, the Town Choir of Heraklion, Crete, and an Istanbul nightclub. She has presented a programme in BBC 3’s series ‘The Choir’ and has written the lyrics for Michael Zev Gordon’s prize-winning choral composition Allele. Her awards include a Cholmondeley Award for poetry and First Prize in the National Poetry Competition. She was first Writer in Residence at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, is Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and Poetry Fellow at King’s College London.

    Gruff Rhys is known around the world for his work as a solo artist as well as singer and songwriter with Super Furry Animals and Neon Neon, and for his collaborations with Gorillaz, Mogwai, Dangermouse and Sparklehorse amongst others. For his latest multimedia project he has retraced the fantastical adventure of his 18th Century relative, the explorer John Evans. In search of a lost tribe of Welsh-speaking Native Americans, John Evans left Wales for America in 1792 with only a $1.75 in his pocket. Fiction, fact, fantasy, myth and music documentary collide in American Interior as Rhys uncovers Evans’ legacy to America, the true circumstances of his death, and his final resting place.
