66 - El Día de Muertos: Mexican Tradition

Hola mi gente! Today we are going to read, translate and listen The Story about El Día de los Muertos. This interesting Mexican tradition. I will be reading the story in Spanish very slowly and you will try to understand word by word. You will be learning some interesting words and new vocabulary and also you will be improving your listening skills in Spanish. I will translate the story in English and then read in Spanish again in a normal speed but explaining some words at the same time..

El Día de Muertos es una festividad mexicana que honra a los seres queridos fallecidos los días 1 y 2 de noviembre, celebrando su memoria y la continuidad de la vida. Es una celebración alegre que combina tradiciones indígenas prehispánicas con creencias católicas, donde se cree que los espíritus de los difuntos regresan a visitar a los vivos. Las familias crean coloridos altares con ofrendas como comida, flores (especialmente la flor de cempasúchil) y velas, y a menudo pasan la noche en las tumbas de sus familiares. Su origen se ubica en la armonía entre la celebración de los rituales religiosos católicos traídos por los españoles y la conmemoración del día de muertos que los indígenas realizaban desde los tiempos prehispánicos; los antiguos mexicas, mixtecas, texcocanos, zapotecas, tlaxcaltecas, totonacas y otros pueblos originarios. Cada año muchas familias colocan ofrendas y altares decorados con flores de cempasúchil, papel picado, calaveritas de azúcar, pan de muerto, mole o algún platillo que le gustaba a sus familiares a quien va dedicada la ofrenda, y al igual que en tiempos prehispánicos, se coloca incienso para aromatizar el lugar.
La tradición también indica que, para facilitar el retorno de las almas a la tierra, se deben esparcir pétalos de flores de cempasúchil y colocar velas trazando el camino que van a recorrer para que estas almas no se pierdan y lleguen a su destino. En la antigüedad este camino llegaba desde la casa de las familias hasta el panteón donde descansaban sus seres queridos. Se cree que las almas de los difuntos regresan a la tierra para visitar a sus familias. Es una conmemoración alegre que celebra la vida, no una ocasión sombría. Se usan altares, ofrendas y se visita a los difuntos. La UNESCO reconoció esta celebración como Patrimonio Cultural Inmaterial de la Humanidad en 2008.
