I spent 37 years hiding a photograph of myself at age 30. Every time I looked at it, I saw what the world taught me to see — a body that didn't measure up, a woman who didn't fit. I was doing body math. Calculating the distance between my reflection and society's standard. What I didn't know then was that I had internalized a voice that was never God's.

Psalm 139 tells us we are fearfully and wonderfully made. Isaiah 64 reminds us we are the clay and He is the Potter. The photograph I hid wasn't the problem — my eyes were.

 I used to apologize for everything. If someone bumped into me, I said sorry. If I had an opinion, I said sorry before I finished the sentence. By my late 50s, I finally stopped. In this video, I share the three specific things I no longer apologize for: my faith, being direct, and outgrowing people. The first one cost me the most — decades of calling myself "spiritual" when I meant saved, of giving credit to resilience when it belonged to Jesus. I got tired of shrinking the most important relationship in my life down to something I whispered. Here is what I learned: when you apologize for things that aren't wrong, you are not being humble. You are just shrinking. And I don't believe that's what you were made for.

For about fifty years, I dressed for other people. I showed up for other people. I nodded at conversations I had no interest in and laughed at things that were not funny and carried a purse that matched my shoes because someone somewhere decided that mattered. And then one morning — I think I was sixty-four — I looked in the mirror and realized I was exhausted. Not physically tired. Soul-tired. The kind of tired you feel when you have been performing for an audience that was never really watching. I am sixty-seven years old. And somewhere in this last decade, I stopped doing a whole list of things that never should have been on my to-do list in the first place. This is that list. In this video, I walk you through seven things I finally let go of — and the peace that came with each one: Other people's opinions. I spent decades making decisions based on what would keep the peace, what would not rock the boat, what would make other people comfortable. I stopped auditioning for approval. And the freedom that came with that is better than any compliment I ever received. Designer labels and fashion trends. I stopped paying extra money to walk around with someone else's name stamped across my chest. I stopped chasing trends that were on their way out by the time I figured them out. At sixty-seven, if it fits, if it is comfortable, and if it makes me feel like myself, I wear it. Attending every function. Baby showers, work gatherings, church events, community dinners — I said yes to all of it for years. Now I know that my presence is a gift, not an obligation. I do not need to be in every room to be valuable to the people in my life. Matching everything. The shoes and purse. The hair and nails. The exhausting maintenance of an image that existed mostly in my own head. None of it added a single day to my life or a single ounce of joy to my spirit. Forcing social obligations and dining out as the default. I stopped trading quality for quantity in my relationships, and that naturally changed where and how I spend my time. The fear of being alone. For years I thought solitude meant loneliness. I was wrong. Solitude is the gift of your own company, and I have learned to cherish it. And the biggest one — I stopped praying for a husband. Not because I stopped believing God could. Because I finally started believing that my singleness was not a punishment.
