  • Improvising and finding fun

What do improvising and having fun have to do with getting through challenging times? A whole lot as it turns out. Listen to this week's interview with the talented Linus Karp as he tells his story of suddenly losing all income and all work overnight when the pandemic struck and having to leave the country!

He talks about long weeks and months with no work but he never stopped creating and never stopped looking for ways to have fun - these are key facets for improvisers - working with what is, continuing to boost a positive attitude and keeping going. Yet he also talks candidly about the days when getting up and just getting a meal on the table was the biggest achievement.

Join us for a little inspiration, a little improv and some great tips. If you watch the podcast on YouTube you'll also be treated to some of Linus's live performances! Watch on Unimenta.

  • Emerging - Bite-sized 1

Welcome to our very first Bite-sized episode from our Emerging series! This is a mini episode where I'll be talking about some of the skills and tips that have helped our interviewees from the creative and performing arts.

Last week I spoke to the lovely art student and poet Elaoise Benson about how she has handled having so much taken away from her as a result of the pandemic. Elaoise speaks candidly of struggling with anxiety and the many hurdles she has successfully navigated to not only cope but really thrive.

In this mini episode I touch on three strategies she has used which you can use too. If you're feeling a little demotivated, a little meh or just want some inspiration, have a listen. And if you missed last week's interview with Elaoise catch up with it here too!

  • What can a second year art student teach us about adaptability?

You're just going to LOVE this episode! I interview the beautiful and talented Ms Elaoise Benson, a second year art student at the prestigious St Martins Central School of Art in London. This interview kicks off the new Emerging series where I'm talking to artists, musicians, singers, actors and performers of all kinds to invite them to tell their stories and talk about the skills that have helped them and are helping them through numerous setbacks.

I think we all have something we can learn from the way others, and especially those in the performing arts and creative industries, have responded to adversity and more importantly, how they are adapting and thriving even after major change and heartache.

Listen to this and be inspired. It's a great way to start your day. Elaoise even read us one of her poems at the end and if you're watching the video of this episode on YouTube, you're in for a treat as the video features a little performance art too!

  • Introduction to Series 8 EMERGING

Delighted to be introducing the brand new Series 8 today! I’m proud to be presenting this new season - EMERGING. We're also introducing brand new podcast original music and every episode will now also be available to WATCH on YouTube too.

With this I really wanted to focus on artists, performers, dancers, singers, musicians and song writers. These professions have been so badly hit by the pandemic that I just know that people within this industry really do have so much to teach us about how to thrive and adapt. I was interested in featuring their stories, of how they’ve adapted to the unfolding crisis and in particular, if and how their craft has changed in response to the pandemic- ie if they’ve ended up composing differently or creating different kinds of art or performance or music to express the situation. We know that it’s the artists, the musicians, the poets, the singers, the performers who have often been best at expressing the most turbulent moments in our history and I’m so excited, humbled and honoured to be able to introduce you to some absolutely amazing people.

In between these interviews I’ll be highlighting some of the main skills and qualities our wonderful interviewees have developed or strengthened during these times and how you can do the same in your own life, regardless of your background or what you do.

  • Interview with Chelsea Green - holistic hormone specialist

This week I'm delighted to be speaking with Chelsea Green on the podcast. Our topic? How do you BUILD resilience? What are easy ways to do this and believe me, building this skill is in your hands and can be done each and every day. Chelsea is an expert on nutrition, lifestyle, psychology and spirituality to help create hormonal balance which in turn supports our resilience skills.

This is also my very first filmed podcast - something new I hope to develop and do more of in 2021!

Chelsea is a registered homeopath, certified hormone specialist and women’s health coach.  After studying homeopathy and running a general clinic for a number of years, Chelsea saw an increasing need to support women who were struggling with hormone imbalance.  Off the back of this, Chelsea studied to become a hormone specialist through the Institute of Transformational Nutrition and deepened this knowledge by become a certified women’s health coach through the Integrative Women’s Health Institute.  Through this study Chelsea has become an expert on nutrition, lifestyle, psychology and spirituality to help create hormonal balance.  Chelsea now uses this learning alongside homeopathic remedies to help women bring balance and vitality back into their lives.  Chelsea is also trained in Homeobotanicals and Australian Bush Flower Essences.

  • Interview with Anne Golden - General Manager Pan Pacific London

On this week’s episode I’m talking with Anne Golden hospitality industry veteran and General Manager of Pan Pacific London, opening next year. Now we all know that the hospitality industry, in particular, has been so severely hit by the pandemic. Perhaps it sounds crazy that anyone is even thinking of launching a brand new hotel in central London in early 2021.

I speak with Anne about truly rising up and finding energy and hope in the middle o great uncertainty. Anne is inspirational and what she has to say is just as important for all other industries seeking to rise up and perhaps, in many ways, reinvent themselves. What are some of the lessons we are learning? How can we build resilience? And what does rising up really mean? It’s something we are all having to do as we get ready to face a new year that will be a mix of new hope, heartache and change as we transition to what I think WILL be a new and exciting era of opportunity if we can learn to see it that way!

Seasoned hotelier Anne Golden joins Pan Pacific London as General Manager, overseeing the first London opening for Pan Pacific Hotels Group.

With considerable London experience working with luxury brands such as Morgans Hotel Group – the original boutique lifestyle brand and hotel disruptor – and Mondrian, Anne has successfully managed new hotel openings and pioneered rebrandings. Through her painstaking attention to detail, vast experience and dedication, she has supported her teams to ensure the hotels were swiftly established as some of the best performing hotels in London.

  • Building resilience and strong mental health

I believe that so much of building strong mental health and resilience lies in our hands. For me it’s about self-awareness more than anything else. An ability to understand what triggers you, why you might feel overwhelmed sometimes but also being able to feel good about yourself and have good relationships with others. I think it’s something quite active rather than just the state of your mental health if that makes sense. So you have strategies in place - you practice self-care and acceptance and you have healthy ways of processing your emotions.

Resilience is your ability to manage stress and uncertainty well. To be able to bounce back but this doesn’t mean that you don’t experience frustration, upset and disappointment - you do but you don’t stay down for long. You know how to get back up fast. Resilient people never think of themselves as victims – they focus their time and energy on changing the things that they have control over.

Join me on this week's podcast episode for lots of tips and ideas for building resilience and mental health. We need to do this now more than ever as we start to move towards what is coming next as we start seeing an end to the pandemic.

“Resilience is accepting your new reality, even if it's less good than the one you had before. You can fight it, you can do nothing but scream about what you've lost, or you can accept that and try to put together something that's good.”

    ― Elizabeth Edwards

  • Interview with Chris Tate - trader, immunologist and resilience expert

What do trading and immunology have in common with building resilience and adaptability? A lot, it turns out. Chris joins us on this episode from Melbourne, Australia for a fascinating look at being far more comfortable with being wrong and not knowing all the answers. We also talk about the importance of sitting and pausing with anxiety and difficult thoughts rather than always rushing towards distraction. It's so important to create space to reflect and to process change and to really know that everything, even this crazy pandemic, is temporary.

When we are faced with uncertainty and stress, what we find hardest is a sense of loss of power. Chris says that as long as we are above ground and breathing we always have choices and decisions that we can make. Focusing on what you can control is so key.

What determines your resilience is what narrative you construct with the future that is now unfolding. Tomorrow is always opaque and we can never know what it brings. Listen now for some great tips and ideas to help you process all this uncertainty and start looking towards tomorrow with hope and strength.
