  • Episode 31: The Week Ending December 1, 1973 Ramblin’ Man on the Midnight Train to Georgia

Back in the 70’s, were you a ramblin' man, never going to the same place twice? When you passed through the Nutbush city limits, did you and your companion think we may never pass this way again? Did you just keep on truckin’ along the highway, or sometimes grabbed a ride on the midnight train to Georgia? In some places you probably were not welcome, and if you tried to engage a local they would just say “leave me alone”. In other places, they would play mind games, and even though you told them I’ve got a name, they would instead call you other things, like the joker or half breed.  In frustration sometimes you probably just greeted people with a generic “hello, it’s me”.  At the end of your journey, hopefully you felt like you were at the top of the world, and at that point, took a photograph of the scene.  This week I promise to uncork that time in a bottle and will show and tell all I know about the Billboard Top 40 from the week of December 1st, 1973.

  • Episode 30: Disko Hits and Misses (Thanksgiving 1974)
This week we have a special episode and a special guest. Back in the ‘70s the way we consumed music was different and sometimes limiting. Today you can just stream those songs you think are fire, and whatever your music taste is, you can do it till your satisfied. Back in the day however, you probably couldn’t afford to buy all the individual records or albums containing your favorite songs. If you wanted to get dancing and rock your baby, you may have had to buy one of those knockoff albums and that was just a shame, shame, shame. Hopefully none of your guests wanted to rock the boat, or worse yet engage in some sort of kung fu fighting about the whole thing. If there was a fight, hopefully everyone could pick up the pieces and channel that energy to dance the kung fu instead. This week we review the 1975 budget knockoff album Disko Hits from Pickwick Records featuring The Disko Band. We will compare and contrast the hit versions of the songs with their Disko Band cover versions. There are some hits, but a fair amount of misses as well. We are virtually traveling back to Thanksgiving 1974 for this one. Not sure if we should be thankful for this album.

Dance the Kung Fu: “Never missing a punch, Carl Douglas just had to show you how it was done.”
Pick Up the Pieces: “The Average White Band put their rythmn (sic) and blues style to this hit. Now listen to the performance of the Disko Band on this album.”
Do It (Til You’re Satisfied): “The B.T. Express weren’t satisfied until they were number one. Listen to the hit.”
Rock the Boat: “The Hues (sic) Corporation rocked the charts with this hit performed here by the Disko Band”
Shame, Shame, Shame: “This song, made a hit by Shirley and Company, is performed here by The Disko Band.”
Kung Fu Fighting: Carl Douglas started a new craze with his big hit. The Disko Band will show you why.”
Get Dancing: “Disco Tex and the Sex-0-lettes got dancing and recorded this hit. Not to be outdone, The Disko Band recorded it for this album.”
Rock Your Baby: “George McCrae’s smash hit of the summer of ’74 now played by The Disko Band.”

  • Episode 29: The Week Ending November 21, 1970 I Think I Love the Green Eyed Lady from Montego Bay

Once it gets to be after midnight, does anybody really know what time it is? Is that the time that you realize that green eyed gypsy was actually a black magic woman? That’s when things got super bad and from the heavens came fire and rain. All you could do was cry the tears of a clown. Alright now, let’s work together and heed the call to listen to the Billboard Top 40 from the week of November 21th, 1970. As the years go by, we have only just begun to explore deeper and deeper.

  • Episode 28: The Week Ending November 18, 1978 Double Vision Causes Me to Kiss You All Over

Back in 1978 was a typical day like another Sunday in Salem where it was fun to stay at the Y.M.C.A.?  Was that just too much heaven for a blue collar man? When Monday came along, in a strange way, perhaps you felt alive, and were ready to take a chance again. With that double vision now cleared, you left that bottle on the shelf and proceeded straight on back to work. After a time, all that bad blood would recede, and even the French who had labeled you “Le Freak” had a change of heart. This week, ooh baby baby, we travel back through those time passages to have a listen to the Billboard Top 40 from the week of November 18th, 1978. I have no problem taking on this load as a beast of burden and not once have I thought that I just wanna stop.

  • Episode 27: The Week Ending November 8, 1975: Born to Run Away from My Little Town

Back in the 70’s there were just too many people with hurt feelings and bad blood. Relationships fell into two categories, diamonds and rust. Some sadly learned that it only takes a minute for their partner to fly robin fly and head sky high.  If you were one of the lucky ones who believed in miracles, you knew who loves you, and sooner or later our day would come. Well we couldn’t think of something better to do so let’s do it again and have a listen to the Billboard Top 40 from the week of November 8th, 1975.

  • Episode 26: The Week Ending October 29, 1977 Help is on the Way, Send in the Clowns

Back in October of 1977 we had to accept the fact that the king is gone. Don’t it make my brown eyes blue just thinking about it? I go crazy remembering, it was as cold as ice. Then baby what a big surprise, she did it. She said hang on; help is on its way. At daybreak she got you down from the 7th floor of that brick house by enticing you to come sail away for a change in latitudes down in blue bayou. Well, this week we look back at the Billboard Top 40 from the week of October 29th, 1977. Perhaps we just disagree on how good it was, but that’s rock and roll for you.

  • Episode 25: The Week Ending October 23, 1971 Ain’t No Sunshine in the Shaft

Long ago and far away it seemed the world was filled with gypsys, tramps, and thieves. Their smiling faces sometimes could hide the fact you were going to be a victim of a stick up. At that point you felt like there just ain’t no sunshine and you couldn’t imagine a world where there was. Perhaps you felt trapped there by a thing called love. Then one fine morning you decided to get a ticket out of town on the peace train. Well, this week we look back at the Billboard Top 40 from the week of October 23rd, 1971. It is not easy reviewing songs that seem so far away, and for some of the songs, it’s a thin line between love and hate, but I guess you have to crawl before you walk.

Episode 24: The Week Ending October 9, 1976 The Wreck of the Rubberband Man

Which musical camp did you belong to in the 70’s? Did you say keep on rocking me, did you shake your booty at the best disco in town, did you play that funky music, or did you say get the funk out my face and give me a fifth of Beethoven? This week we try and getaway from all that controversy and get the lowdown of the Billboard Top 40 from the week ending October 9, 1976. Don’t fear the devil woman, she’s gone. Remember when you were lovin’, touchin’, squeezin’, thinking you were the boss, in the driver’s seat and getting ready for the main event. Then she pushed you away and told you were nothing but a dirty white boy and good girls don’t. You responded by saying, please don’t go, don’t bring me down, and why do you lead me on? Ain’t that a shame.
