WORT 89.9FM Madison · Madison Bikes Seeks Safer Roads

According to the Federal Highway Administration, cars kill almost 7,000 bicyclists and pedestrians in the United States a year, and injure a staggering 123,000 a year more.  Even worse, despite millions of dollars to improve traffic safety, these numbers continue to rise.  Is this danger just a fact of life – something we have to accept?  The advocacy group Madison Bikes thinks we can fight back.  On Monday, October 30th – that’s tonight – Madison Bikes will hold a screening of the documentary “The Street Project” at Union South.  Aaron Levine is a graduate student of planning at the University of Wisconsin and is on the Board of Directors of Madison Bikes.

WORT 89.9FM Madison · DWD Combats Worker Misclassification

One of the great achievements of the 20th century labor movement was the creation of universal, mandatory worker safeguards like Worker’s Compensation, Social Security, unemployment insurance and civil rights protections.  But the 21st century has seen more and more employers seeking to dodge those protections by classifying workers as independent contractors instead of employees. The Wisconsin Department of Workforce and Development has had enough, and has started a campaign to crack down on worker misclassification.  Ramona Natera is the Administrator for the Equal Rights Division of the Department of Workforce Development, and she joins us now by phone.

You may not know it, but the U. S. has a visa waver program with over 40 countries which allows U. S. passport holders to visit, with full access, those countries without requiring a visa, and the same privileges for citizens of those countries to visit the U. S. Not included in these 40 visa reciprocity agreements is Israel, excluded because of a failure to meet requirements, and, in particular, restrictions and discrimination of U. S. citizens of Palestinian background. Adam Shapiro, Director of Advocacy for Israel/Palestine at Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN), talks about the restrictions Israel places on these US/Palestinian residents.

Helen Shiller, author of the book “Daring to Struggle, Daring to Win”, who will be appearing at the Wisconsin Book Festival, joins the Thursday edition of the 8 O’Clock Buzz to talk about her decades of struggle to bring progressive politics to Chicago, following her activism on the UW-Madison campus in the late 1960’s.

Helen was a Chicago alder for twenty-five years and helped implement the progressive programs proposed by the late Chicago mayor Harold Washington despite organized opposition from a bloc of entrenched alders used to the politics of patronage.  Helen will be at the Madison Public Central Library on Friday, October 20, at 4:30 pm.

With the UAW strike entering its 5th week, Professor Emeritus of Economics at the University of Massachusetts, William Lazonick co-authored a paper detailing the actual pay of CEOs, especially focusing on GM CEO Mary Barra, with relation to the average worker. The calculation numbers of the unions were corrected with stock options and other compensations, now calculated at 479 times the average auto worker. Lazonick argues for a ban on “stock buy-backs”, calling them “toxic” to the company, only benefitting the CEOs and shareholders.

In an application to DOE, originally for decommissioning the Palisades Nuclear reactor, Holtec is applying for unprecedented reactor restart of the shut down reactor, but reveals the ulterior motive is to build small modular reactors at all decommissioning sites; details $10.7 Billion+ in bailouts, as detailed in the report by Kevin Kamps, watchdog for Beyond Nuclear.
