The current strike by the United Auto Workers (UAW) is important not just for those working in the auto industry, but for workers all over the country.

That’s the opinion of Jonathan Melrod, author and labor activist, who joins the 8 O’Clock Buzz to discuss the recent history of labor activism in Wisconsin and the increased interest in unions throughout the country.

Jon recounts the days of union activities in Kenosha at American Motors when the struggle for workers rights included combatting racism and misogyny in the work place, and the increased awareness of young people today about the importance of effective activism.

Jon has authored the book, Fighting Times – Organizing on the Front Lines of the Class War, which goes into much more detail on these topics.

October is domestic abuse awareness month, and the Domestic Abuse Intervention Services (DAIS) is organizing a rally at the State Capitol on Sunday, October 1 to commence events for the month.  Three members of DAIS, Ayden Romer, Lyndsey Winchel, and Kelly Kleven join the Thursday 8 O’Clock Buzz to talk about the on-going crisis of domestic abuse in the Dane County area, and the services available to the community including legal advocacy, case management and sheltering, programming for youths, support groups and a 24-hour help line.

Sara Andrews, lead organizer of Madison’s Vegan Fest, joins the Thursday edition of the 8 O’Clock Buzz to talk about the “no-meat-up” taking place at Lunney Lake Farm Park, Saturday, September 30 from 11 am to 5 pm.  The event will include informational programs, food vendors, music and kids’ activities.  Whether you’re concerned about compassionate living, a healthier diet, better stewardship of the environment, or just want to spend a lovely day in the outdoors you’ll not want to miss this memorable “no-meating”.

In his own words, “It’s been a long haul” and with the recent publication of his memoir Obreros Unidos-The Roots and Legacy of the Farmworkers Movement, Jesús Salas tells us in riveting detail just how long a haul it’s been. Jesús joins Thursday 8 O’Clock Buzz host Tony Castañeda to talk his book, and about his lifetime of work in the farmworkers movement, including his childhood experiences in the 1960s as a migrant worker, and subsequent efforts as a union organizer working on behalf of all migrant laborers to improve working conditions and address widespread violations of housing codes and minimum wage laws. With a seemingly bottomless reservoir of energy, Jesús continues to advocate for migrant workers’ rights and build on the legacy his movement – Obreros Unidos – Workers United – has had, and continues to have on generations of Chicano and Latin American laborers.

As if the East Side of Madison needed anything else to cement its status as the place for cool, creative and community-minded citizens to congregate, this Saturday’s first-ever Emerson East-Eken Park Art Walk just might settle the issue once and for all. Thursday 8 O’Clock Buzz host Tony Castañeda welcomes East Side residents and artists (Susan Kay, a ceramicist, and graphic designer/illustrator Charlotte Easterling) who are among the talented folks behind the conceptualization and culmination of the inaugural neighborhood artwalk. For the first time in 20 years, we have new drugs targeting the underlying causes of Alzheimer’s Disease — according tp Dr. Art Walaszek, co-leader of the Outreach, Recruitment and Engagement Core at the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center. Walaszek talks about the disease and treatments, and offers the upcoming public conference of the “Fall Community Conversation: New treatment Options for Alzheimer’s Disease” being held Thursday, September 21, 2023, from 4:30-7:30 at the Middleton Performing Arts Center.
