For this weeks' episode, one of our own team members, Reine, led the discussion with other members. As someone who has grown up in Lebanon and still lives there, Reine wants to bring some attention to the norms surrounding Lebanese politics. In a discussion with Americans, Reine guides our understanding of the corruption in the Lebanese government, the prominent role that religion plays in political actions, and the human rights violations currently simmering in the country.
Enjoy the continuation of Elan, Ella, Emily, and Celia's conversation on reproductive rights! Their conversation was so incredibly productive and lively, that they had to split the content into two parts!
Amidst the passing of United States' most restrictive abortion law in Texas, Ella, Elan, Emily, and Celia thought it would be a good idea to not only touch on the implications of the new legislation in the U.S, but also how reproductive rights compare abroad. According to the Center for Reproductive Rights' map of "The World's Abortion Laws," the Latin American region had some of the most restrictive abortion laws, so it felt fitting for the group to educate themselves as to why. The group had an incredibly productive conversation, so this topic will be split into two parts. In Part Two, we will continue our conversation on Latin American countries' policy, as well as the general human right's arguments surrounding reproductive rights.
Ella is joined by four new members today, as they talk about the global effort to combat climate change in light of the new IPCC report.
Welcome to the new 866 Politics! Anna and Ella realized that they wanted to include more global perspectives and varying opinions on their podcast, so ta da! Here's our team! Today you will just be hearing from four new members, but we have almost 30 team members total who you will meet in the near future. Our vow is to learn alongside you, not pretend to be experts. We aren't experts. We are young people trying to tear down the gatekeeping of political understanding, so we can all become more educated, compassionate global neighbors. Enjoy our first episode where we discuss what's going on with the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan, and our own individual perceptions of the issue.
We have a regularly scheduled politics oriented episode for this week! We cover the growing Anti-Asian hate crimes in the U.S, Sarah Everard's recent death along with violence against women, disappointing news coming out of Turkey, and much more. Oh and Ella pronounces something wrong and Anna corrects her, per usual.
Ella and Anna introduce a new type of episode, the Burnout Chronicles! Both being high school students during a pandemic, Anna and Ella decide to give themselves a break and talk about whatever has been on their mind, which is apparently Parallel Universes, Pride and Prejudice, and room mate searching (basically a normal Tuesday night Facetime call). Enjoy their brain dumps!
Ella and Anna discuss the new Johnson & Johnson vaccine, the American Rescue Plan, the best (actually the worst, but so hilarious) of CPAC, and the United States' air "stroke" (as Ella cutely called it) against Syria. Anna continues to put up with Ella's consistent mispronunciation of words, while Ella lives in her fantasy world with universal world peace. What else is new?
Anna and Ella touch on numerous things: Texas freezing, Ted Cruz's mullet & poor dog, Rush Limbaugh's death, and Biden's unfortunate deportations. Of course, they bring you some amazing stupid tweets, and international news coming out of a trade deal with Israel, Syria, and Russia.
In this episode, Ella sums it up perfectly with the phrase "The U.S Is Kinda Wigging Out Though" (hence the title). Ella and Anna breakdown every day of Former President Trump's second impeachment trial, the state of Covid-19 in the U.S, and the protests in Haiti. Somehow boba tea is brought up several times.
