The house was alive with the usual morning routine. Pots clinked, water ran, and soft footsteps moved through the rooms. Javier’s mother was singing in the shower as she got ready for work, while his father worked in the kitchen, cooking breakfast.

Javier stood in front of the mirror that hung on his closet door, adjusting his hearing aid. The dark blue, shiny metallic part curved behind his ear, and the clear part sat snugly over his ear canal.
