School is out for summer, but across Jefferson County Public Schools, thousands of students are still learning. Concerned that kids may have fallen behind in reading and math during the pandemic, JCPS dramatically expanded summer programming.

Several Kentucky state lawmakers have introduced legislation to limit discussions of race in the classroom. It’s a move several other conservative state legislatures have already made. While the bills don’t explicitly mention “critical race theory,” their sponsors have name-checked the concept in press releases. It happened during the first night of mass protests for Breonna Taylor, the 26-year-old Black woman killed by police in her home little more than two months prior. On Tuesday night, the Jefferson County Board of Education will vote on whether to join many other school districts across the country and limit suspensions in the earliest grades: PreK through third grade.
