More than 51-thousand people attended the 147th run for the roses yesterday [Saturday], where Medina Spirit and jockey John Velasquez won the Kentucky Derby race. As WFPL’s Jess Clark reports, despite rising COVID infections in some parts of the world, many Derby goers said they felt like the pandemic is over.

The Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing is considered one of the most elusive sporting accomplishments: a back-to-back sweep of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes. To even be eligible, competitors have to go through a process that dates back to 1986, but you have to go back even further, to May 1985, to understand why.

The coronavirus pandemic forced the delay of the Derby from the first Saturday in May until the first Saturday in September.

Wilkinson is a poet, fiction writer and an associate professor at the University of Kentucky. She stepped into her poet laureate role officially Friday. WFPL arts reporter Stephanie Wolf spoke with Wilkinson about how she sees the position of state poet laureate.
