Curator of the Olive Pink Botanic Gardens, Sam Hussey, chats to the Big Brekky about an event the Gardens will host on May 25th; the 'Alice Springs Longest Desert Lunch. This event is the major annual fundraiser for the Hamilton Downs Youth Camp, a not-for-profit community organisation that provides a bush destination for youth outdoor education activities. Thanks to a dedicated group of enthusiastic volunteers, weekly youth athletic meets have returned to the Barkly Region. Over the weekend, the Tennant Creek Athletics Committee ran their first 'come try' day, which saw over 40 young people try their hands (and feet) at throwing, jumping and running, while the toddlers' 'Tiny Tots' program ran a range of fun, movement-based learning activities. Committee Member Matt Blankenspoor joined The Big Brekky Show from the Tennant Creek studio to tell us more. The program continues every Thursday afternoon at the Tennant Creek Primary School from 5pm.

Simon Duke, the 2023 West Macs Monster winner, shares his race experience with The Big Brekky as we prepare for 2024's event on the 17th of May. The formidable endurance race sees ultra runners attempt the entire Larapinta Trial, over 231 kms of single track rugged terrain in the West MacDonnell (Tjoritja) National Park of arid zone Central Australia.

Simon, an Alice Springs local, last year set an astonishing new end to end record of 39 hours, 56 minutes and 26 seconds. Also in 2023, a new female record was set by Perth runner, Meghann Coffey, finishing in 47 hours, 11 minutes and 38 seconds.

Those attending Wide Open Space Festival last weekend may have benefited from the generosity of The Desert Fruit Company, who were handing out free dates - of the fruit variety. Located southeast of Alice Springs, just shy of the edge of the Simpson Desert, the Tamara Date Plantation was established in 1991, and has been managed by members of the Tamara Co-operative since 2014. Kim Mackay from the Co-operative chats to the Big Brekky about the remote worker-run, sustainable, Australian date farm.
