8th House Healers

This one goes out to Nate, Happy 50th (in Spirit) May 11, 2023, to my dinosaur brother and bird friend through time and space!

Evvin Marin is an interdisciplinary artist based in Massachusetts. Evvin and Eliza discuss witches in history versus their archetypal status, chronic illness, the creative process, perception, intuition, Tarot spreads, and the power of finding one’s voice… and one’s people.

Mockingbird

My curtain swings in sleeve, a gondola unswayed, remonitored. At this digression’s consent, congealed in shadow, I wipe the meringue from the sill.

Modified in frame, the masses graze in suspension, one string’s descent upon the herd, the valley forges unto my eyes one image.

From this lofted perch I sit, I move across my mesa. Each member in rally a full makeover....... achieved. A new sector’s incision, finding the place beneath ones neighbored. I do not contend.

The worn, inbound lanes in sight, I find my place within: I seek outbound. The brush relays the density as it bears no trails yet made. With a step, I travel in a Mockingbird.

-Poem by Nate Cook

Cardamom Clove

Tread the footfalls.

Fall down breathless.

Scatter petals,

Pink and restless.

Would you wander

Where the light fades?

Ultraviolet,

Sweet on new shades…

If you would sin like cinnamon,

Cardamom, clove,

Get a mouthful of sugar,

Tiptoe over the ghosts,

You would get rich like criminals

But gentle as lovers.

All creatures of sun,

Come on and turn the day over.

Dicentra spectabilis,

Lantern of hearts.

Not all who fade

Go traveling.

Not all who glow

As phosphorus

Are lost.

Lyrics by Evvin Marin

Kitsune Garcia “Kit” is an acupuncturist, Yogi, musician, artist, Tarot deck creator and reader. She has two Master's degrees, one in chemistry, the other in Oriental Medicine. Kit has always believed that divinity is inherent in everything, and as a chemist, she knows that down to our tiniest molecules, we are mostly space, and in our space, we are all connected. Kit went through what she calls a dark night of the soul, an unexplained period of severe, flu-like illness in which she “learned how to die”… but then didn’t. Listen to her fascinating story of reconnecting to- and healing of- self.

Maria Belmonte left the funeral industry some years ago to practice acupuncture. Although Maria looked blood, guts, and death in the face on a daily basis as a mortician, she found that the scariest part of the work was the "good ol' boys club" mentality; her skills and intelligence were routinely dismissed. The most toxic thing about the work environment was not the formaldehyde in the embalming fluid, but again, the treatment she received as an Asian woman. The funeral industry proved brutal on her small frame. Maria developed fibromyalgia and a host of other health problems from chronic overwork. Maria cares deeply for her patients. Chinese medicine has provided Maria with a gentler means with which to express her compassionate healing skills set on others. Perhaps, like all of us, she just needs to remember to save some healing energy for herself.

Happy Earth Day 2023! 🌍 Green burials, home funerals, and conservation, oh my!

Lee Webster has been on the frontlines of funeral reform advocacy for many years. She has worked in all areas of end of life and after death care and has been passionate about a return to the natural ways we used to care for the dead- in the home and in the community. In this spotlight episode, Eliza picks Lee’s brain about hospice, funerals, and cemeteries from her developing lens and role of social worker. Lee shares her experiences in caring for the body of a loved one, of being truly present to the sensual bond that helps make meaning of our loved one’s death, and softens our grief experience. Be sure to listen to the end for Lee’s own ghost stories- of being lovingly haunted by her parents, that is- after their passings.

Here are just a FEW of the amazing things Lee has been involved with over the last decade:

Arwen Lynch Poe is a medium, Tarot reader, prolific writer, creative consultant, and professional “joy seeker” who encourages others to find their own joy. Arwen came to Tarot out of a need to find a divinatory tool for her spiritual practice. Her first deck was the Thoth but it didn't quite resonate. She discovered The Herbal Tarot and her intuitive abilities took off. In this featured interview with Eliza, Arwen recounts childhood encounters with unexplained phenomena, and the many ways she received affirmations about her psychic gifts along her very unique path to Spirit.

Claudia, also known as ‘The Death Faerie’, is a spirit medium, death doula, and coach. A fascinating woman who survived an abusive childhood, she moved to England at age three where she hung out in cemeteries and talked to spirits. She sees- or rather feels- faeries, dragons, angels, guides, and aliens and describes how each energy has its own weight and quality. Because of the amount of messages she has encountered in which crossed over loved ones use symbols to communicate, she finally realized that she didn't need to "learn" prescribed systems of knowledge. Instead she created and used her own dictionary of symbols. In their conversation, Claudia helps Eliza make sense of the passing of a loved one years before and reassures her of the role she played in helping his spirit find peace.
