Last week, on Tuesday the 4th of August, the NZ Bakel’s Supreme Pie Awards were held for 2026. Tuesday Wire host Alex and producer Liam went along to investigate these awards, which have established themselves as an iconic celebration of New Zealand’s favourite food. At the awards, we spoke with MC Jeremy Corbett, multiple-time winner Patrick Lam from Patrick’s Pies in Tauranga, winning apprentices Beau Corric and Dara Chhom from Euro Patisserie in Torbay, celebrity judge Gareth Stewart, and longstanding Pie Awards attendee Jeremy Wells about the awards, why the ceremony is so great, and why they matter. 

he Advertising Standards Authority has recently forced billboards for the weight-loss drug Wegovy to change after it was decided that the fine print on the ad was too small to properly inform viewers.

The decision by the advertising authority has revived discussions about direct-to-consumer prescription drug advertising in New Zealand. The United States and New Zealand are the only OECD countries that allow this form of advertising, and the practice has regularly drawn criticism from doctors and researchers.

In 2023, the Labour government at the time introduced the therapeutic products law, which formalised the legality of direct ads, but this has since been repealed by the current government, leaving DTCA of prescription drugs up for debate.

To discuss direct-to-consumer prescription drug advertising in New Zealand, producer Thomas spoke to the University of Auckland Associate Professor David Menkes.

Last week, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon promised that, if re-elected, the national party would pursue a referendum on MMP. The announcement was caught with surprise by many, and met with criticism and concern by just as many, with coalition party leader Winston Peters condemning the promise as a power grab.

The weekend also saw the end of the window provided to local governments by the central government to submit their council amalgamation plans, leaving councils in a variety of circumstances, with some coming together with a unified plan for their regions, and some unable to reach an agreement, with some in both camps expressing displeasure with the time provided.
