Joanne was in Washington D.C. a few nights before the Inauguration of President Obama back in January 2009. She was there to attend. Unfortunately she never made it. Shorty after arriving that night changed her life forever. 

We learn a little about the bone chilling experience Joanne that was forced to go through beginning that winter evening, some of the aftermath, and what lead her to publishing her book- Headstrong- Surviving a Traumatic Brain Injury 10 years later.

Welcome to A BATTLE WITHIN, Episode 049

Today on A BATTLE WITHIN, Terry and Drew get to have a chat with Jessy and Chris Munch. Jessy is a listener and has been following along on Instagram.

Jessy and Chris are out of the Portland, Oregon area and found themselves dealing with Jessy's head injury within their first year of marriage.

We look into what happened, how the recovery is going and what some of what they have done to accommodate all the sudden and unexpected changes in their lives. The adaption continues as Jessy works diligently at the healing to this day with Chris by her side.

Chris offers some of his perspectives as the spouse and very much the caregiver as well. As we all know, this kind of trauma can tear a relationship apart. Being married for such a short period of time has got to lead to additional stress and things to sort out. How are they working through it?

Jessy has become actively involved in helping in the TBI community and have become an advocate for wearing helmets.

I'm sure you will appreciate their willingness to openly share their story.

Welcome to A BATTLE WITHIN, Episode 047

Today on A BATTLE WITHIN we have the honor of speaking with Victor Medina and Dr. Roxana Delgado of TBI Warrior Foundation out of San Antonio, Texas.

If you been listening to A BATTLE WITHIN up until this point, you know we have brought up the fact that many of our soldiers are fighting in the arena of Traumatic Brain Injuries. 

In fact, head injuries have become the notable injury of war during our conflicts in the Middle East.

According to the Department of Defense, as of this recording, over 350,000 of our warriors have sustained a Traumatic Brain Injury.

Having the opportunity to speak to someone personally injured in this way and his support system has been an honor. 

What makes it even cooler is that they are doing some incredible things to help other veterans, their caregivers, their children and anybody else who needs it within their own recoveries and healing processes.

A little more than 10 years ago, Sergeant Victor Medina was serving his country with his third tour in Iraq. The Purple Heart recipents life was changed forever that day in June. 

Victor sustains a moderate Traumatic Brain Injury.

It must be said- that when a trauma like this occurs, it affects many people and the ripple affect of that is real. That's where Dr. Roxana Delgado, Victors wife comes in. Not only is she thrust into the role of Caregiver but goes on to help others. 

We spend time learning about the foundation they started and all the amazing work they have been up to.

We have come to learn that setting goals in the TBI/PCS community can be quite different than the traditional setting, so we will hit on some of those specifics from our perspectives as well.

Welcome to A BATTLE WITHIN, Episode 44

Today on A BATTLE WITHIN, Terry and Drew get to spend some time talking with Kevin McDonald. 

We met Kevin at the Mind Your Brain Conference in October of this past year. When we met we got to learn a touch about his story and some of the incredible work he is doing. His work is conducted on both the state and federal levels in an effort to help those affected by the invisible injury.

Kevin has much to offer and because of this we are offering our chat with him in a two part series. Today in part one, we cover his own injury from 2009, his recovery process and the support he has had available to him. 

We also get to learn a little about what he has been up recently as he continues down the road of trying to improve.

Next week we will spend time reviewing his wonderful organization Restart Your Life/Review Your Mind and covering the advocacy work he has down statewide and on the federal level. 

We promise you will find much of what Kevin has to say to be important and valuable. Having somebody like this in the fight in our community of warriors is fantastic and deserves to be recognized.

Welcome to A BATTLE WITHIN, Episode 43, I'm Drew Niemann.

Today on A BATTLE WITHIN, Terry, My wife and the inspiration for the program and I get to spend time chatting with Janine Kirby about her journey after experiencing her injury on a construction site.

Kirby takes us through her injury which includes brain surgery to the other side where she has become an active person in being of service to others in their own personal journeys.

Before the accident Kirby was a serious boxer where she learned to fight and carry a positive attitude. The tenacity and contagious positive attitude ring true today in Kirby. We look forward to sharing this with you.
