James is a well-known figure in international social healing who has conducted healing and reconciliation dialogues for twenty years. His work as codirector of the Social Healing Project led him to Rwanda, Israel/Palestine, and Northern Ireland. He is on the extended faculty of the Institute of Noetic Sciences and is its past president, and was also the former Washington office director of Amnesty International for over ten years, testifying frequently before Congress.

The Relationship Foundation is a 501(c)(3) educational initiative that incorporates a Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum, Healthy Relationships 101, in New York City high schools. We have also published a book by the same title. We use a process called “Nonviolent Communication” (NVC) that gives one the tools to identify and articulate their needs and feelings without blame and judgment. We also teach an approach to listening empathically.  Students and teachers alike acknowledge that building a vocabulary of needs and feelings enhances their critical thinking, empathy, and respect.

 This interview will educate the audience about what this one organization is doing to address the social and educational issues present in our school system among high school students, but even more, the dearth of education in our society about something as fundamental as carrying on harmonious, responsible communication and relationships of all sorts, despite the sustenance of our society pivoting on it.  As well as the strides that are being made to remedy this.

Fran Shaw, Ph.D. is a longtime practitioner in a spiritual discipline, a professor teaching writing at the University of Connecticut, and an award-winning author whose works include Notes on The Next Attention, Writing My Yoga, and 50 Ways to Help You Write. Her new book Lord Have Murphy: Waking Up in the Spiritual Marketplace explores with great fun how contact with a finer Attention awakens us to a completely different level of being.

Continuing on the subject of understanding the relationships between the mind, brain and body, Mitchell’s guest this evening is neuropsychologist, consultant, teacher and author Mario Martinez. Dr. Martinez’ book The Mind Body Code has met with international acclaim. Dr. Mario E. Martinez is a clinical neuropsychologist. In 1998 he developed his theory of Biocognitive Science based on research that demonstrates how thoughts and their biological expression coemerge within a cultural history. Academic science continues to divide mind and body, as well as ignore the influence cultural contexts have on the process of health, illness and aging. For example, cultures that support growing older as a positive development associated with increased wisdom and abilities have higher numbers of centenarians living healthier lives, than cultures that view aging as a process of inevitable deterioration.

Wednesday, June 24, 6pm EDT: This week’s radio show is a Round Table about the Institute for Noetic Sciences (IONS) and the upcoming Conference in Chicago, July 22-26.  Joining Mitchell in the Round Table are IONS Founder, astronaut Edgar Mitchell, IONS current President Cassandra Vieten and the internationally-renowned visionary evolutionist Barbara Marx Hubbard.
