A conversation with Dr. Frank LaFerla on his research with stem cells - November 2012

Listen Later

Dr. Frank LaFerla is Director of the Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders, University of California, Irvine. He was the first to use stem cell technology for use in mice engineered for both the plaques and tangles that are characteristic of human Alzheimer’s disease. Recently, his group reported data that shows that neural stem cells can rescue – and actually restore – memory and function in mice which have Alzheimer’s-like cognitive deficits. During this call he discusses his research and answers questions.
Dr. LaFerla was introduced by Dr. Diane Bovenkamp, Science Communications Specialist at American Health Assistance Foundation, AHAF, which funds some of his work. This call was made possible by the generous support of the Zickler Family Foundation.
