This week, The Magic School Bus takes a trip into the world of chemistry. While the episode starts with baking, Sarah and Matt quickly move beyond the kitchen to explore the fundamental ideas that underpin all of chemistry.

What exactly is matter? How do atoms combine to form molecules? What is the difference between physical changes and chemical reactions and why do why do they happen at all? 

Whether you loved chemistry class like Matt or spent it staring blankly at the periodic table like Sarah, this episode offers an accessible introduction to Chemistry and a little chat at the end about our thoughts on science education in schools.

This week, Sarah and Matt venture back into The Magic School Bus’s haunted house to explore the science of sound. What begins as a lesson on vibrations quickly devolves into an argument over why sound travels better through solid objects. (Sarah is still upset)

Along the way, they discuss sound waves, pitch, frequency, and the anatomy of the ear, while also exploring how bats use echolocation to navigate in complete darkness. The conversation takes its usual turn into psychology, culture, and music—examining why certain sounds evoke emotion, how different musical traditions develop, and why everything from pop songs to Gregorian chants can resonate so deeply with listeners.

The Magic School Bus heads into the desert to explore how animals survive one of the harshest environments on Earth. Sarah and Matt discuss desert biomes, extreme temperatures, as well as plant and animal adaptation. Along the way, they explore evolution, climate, and the delicate balance that allows life to thrive in such an unforgiving landscape. Oh, and also desert shrimp?

The class heads underground to meet the Rot Squad and explore what happens after living things die. Sarah and Matt dig into decomposition, fungi, microbes, and the environmental conditions that speed up—or slow down—the process of decay. Along the way, they discuss the science of scent, why decomposition smells the way it does, how heat, moisture, oxygen, and climate impact breakdown, and the hidden systems that recycle nutrients back into the ecosystem.
