‘A murder so despicable the like which hasn’t been seen in a long time’ was how this murder from Nottingham in 1905 was described.
The victim, a young boy just short of his 5th birthday, was so brutally beaten that his mangled body was nearly decapitated.  The murderer – the friendly lodger taken in who seemed fond of the young boy and who had babysat him more than once – was quickly discovered.
This horrific crime shocked the community and brought up the question of what constitutes an insanity plea?
