In this episode, we will look at the lives of four people who were assigned female at birth, but would go on to serve in the opposing armies of the American Civil War. Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, Loretta Janet Velazquez, Lyons Wakeman, and Albert Cashier all served their countries with vigor and doing so while transgressing the ideas of femininity and masculinity. These four people only made up a sliver of a fraction of the people who either cross-dressed or who lived as men, despite having been born female. After listening to this episode, there should be no doubt remaining that trans folk are just as capable to serve in the armed services as cis people. After all, they have been serving this whole time!

Half of her life was lived as a man, the other as a woman, but no matter how she presented herself to the world, this trans icon of history lived a life of intrique, adventure, and occasionally, a little bit of shade!
