Juneau-ite Megan McMillan is working on her MFA in New Zealand. She is in Juneau for six weeks, collecting data for her thesis: “Resident Perspectives of the Cruise Industry in Juneau, Alaska.” She is accepting survey responses and also looking for subjects to interview in a longer format.

A new singing group, Singing for Our Lives, started this March in Juneau. Group leader Leslie Wood and participant Jenny Smith share information on the group and its goal to “sing simple songs of resistance, joy, solidarity, and healing to keep us going in these dark times.” The group is open to all, and meets on Monday evening at Dzantik’I Heeni Middle School.

The Jensen-Olsen Arboretum is set to expand to summer hours on April 1. Manager Ginger Hudson shares upcoming events and plans, including Mother’s Day and children’s classes.

Juneau Afternoon – Recorded live on Friday, March 13, 2026
The live debut of Mike Maas’s Blue Nagoon project. The concert is on March 14 at The Crystal Saloon. It will feature original songs from his albums “Here Be Dragons,” “Love in the Time Of…,” and a forthcoming rock album, and covers of some favorite songs from the 80s to today. The band is Maas on keys/guitar, Nick Fishman on drums, and Simon Taylor on bass, and five Juneau singers: Alyssa Fischer, Patricia Lattime, Shona Osterhout, Salissa Thole, and Allison Waid.

The Juneau Underground Motion Picture Society presents its Short Film Festival at the Goldtown Nick on Thursday, March 19, Friday, March 20, and Sunday, March 22. Pat Race and Aaron Suring chat about the history of the JUMP Festival and how to submit for this year’s fest.

A new collective of doulas, the SE AK Birth Collective, is offering two community events during World Doula Week beginning March 22.

“Plants Out of Place” Fireside Lecture features representatives from Southeast Alaska Watershed Coalition and Tlingit & Haida discussing invasive plant species in Southeast and how they impact the lands and waters around us. The talk is at Mendenhall Glaciers on Friday, March 27, at 7:00 p.m.

The Juneau School District offers a variety of optional programs for students. Representatives from the Juneau Community Charter School, Montessori Borealis, and the Tlingit Culture, Language, and Literary programs share more details and upcoming events to preview the schools.

Music of Debussy, Delibes, Hahn, Strauss, Schubert, Schumann, Dvorak, Rimsky-Korsakov, Tortaro and more. Performances are Friday, March 13, 7 pm at Chapel by the Lake and Saturday, March 14, 2 pm at the Alaska State Museum.

The Juneau STEAM Coalition presents Curiosity Unleashed: A Community STEAM Event for K-6 Families on Monday, March 16, 2026, from 5:30-7:30 at Thunder Mountain Middle School. The theme for this year’s event is “Cycles and Spirals, Patterns and Process”.
