A Life in Dublin

Every now and then we meet people who are different. Different in a way that you can say to yourself, I’m so happy I had the chance to meet this person, because, from a very selfish point of view, the time I spent with them made me feel good about myself and about those around me. Luke is one of those people. We met at one of our live podcasts where we were lucky enough to enjoy some of his music, but also the energy he creates when he plays. On a normal Monday evening, he had us all singing along to hooky songs that we had only just heard for the first time. That, in and of itself, is a skill and talent that not everyone can claim. In this conversation we go into detail on the road he travelled to become the person he is today and how that journey translates into some of his amazing music. Luke will be playing the Workmans club on the 24th of February. If you’re looking for an evening of great music and good vibes, then I’ll hopefully see you there. We talk about mental health quite a bit in this episode and I’ll attach some links to some of the amazing organisations who provide mental health services for those who need it. Never be afraid to reach out. And now, here’s my conversation with Luke…Tickets for Luke’s gig: https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/luke-clerkin-live-from-the-library-ep-launch-tickets-512028449877https://www.instagram.com/lukeclerkin/Photo credit - Julie O’Brien @pizza_eggLinks to services in Dublin:https://stcatherinescounselling.ie/https://letsgettalking.ie/https://www.shannonshopeline.ie/http://www.services.drugs.ie/directory/view/swan-family-support-projecthttps://grow.ie/Book mentioned:https://www.audible.co.uk/pd/Lost-Connections-AudiobookArtistsDamien Dempsey - https://open.spotify.com/artist/0bmF1w9eyJrY4CHyjpTQOW?si=PtNsmUL1QGGIhdlPlnssPwDamien Rice - https://open.spotify.com/artist/14r9dR01KeBLFfylVSKCZQ?si=-N5Hf9-7TwOn2ScmUXvrYAGlen Hansard - https://open.spotify.com/artist/3Caot8EtHX6wLpNF2wRzS0?si=LRbfsZrVSSe_CboGAhYL6wJeff Buckley - https://open.spotify.com/artist/3nnQpaTvKb5jCQabZefACI?si=zL9jZRvkSuiJUZT7B8Fzqw

Hello there and welcome to A Life in Dublin and to the second episode in a series of review shows where we attempt to critique pieces of art related in some way to Ireland or Irish culture.I, Mark, will be joined in these episodes by a good friend of mine Eoin who is currently blazing trails in the audio industry over in Copenhagen in Denmark. One important preface, we have zero expertise in any domain of arts or culture, so please remember that we have taken it upon ourselves to critique these mostly wonderful works of art simply because we have eyes, ears and a head. Our opinions are really not worth paying that much attention to.In this weeks episode we’ll be a taking stroll over the west of Ireland hills with Colin Farrell and the rest of the cast of the highly rated Banshees of Inisherin which is currently winning all kinds of accolades in Los Angeles. We try to figure out what it’s all about and whether or not it deserves the hype. Also, important to note this episode contains spoilers so if you haven’t seen the movie and plan to go and see it, then maybe give this episode a miss.

This podcast is a little different as it was recorded in front of a live audience. If you're a big fan of the more intimate podcasts, don't worry, we'll be releasing those episodes every week as well!Emmet is a spoken word poet, a Dubliner and an inspiration all mixed up into one charismatic talent. It was a pleasure to talk to him about how he got into poetry, his love of the art, his roots, the impact the creative arts can have on your mental health and much more. To top all of this off we were lucky enough to be joined by Luke Clerkin and Brid Lyons as they closed off the show for us with some incredible tunes. It was a special night for all who attended and I hope you can enjoy some of the brilliant energy that we experienced on the night in the format of a podcast. For those in Dublin, we run live podcasts every Monday evening so please do get in touch if you’d like to come along.https://www.instagram.com/emmet_obrien_poetry/https://www.instagram.com/lukeclerkin/https://www.instagram.com/bridlyonsmusic/

After spending some time in Paris, Madeline decided to make the move to Dublin thanks to a good job offer, but most of all, because it represented a new adventure. She made sure the adventure didn’t stop once she arrived on Irish soil though, as she rediscovered her passion for acting and subsequently began performing stand-up comedy here in the capital City. We delve into her creative process and what motivates her as a writer, an actor and a stand-up comic. She tells us about her time growing up between New York, Connecticut and Austin and we chat a little bit about how Ireland relates to other countries. As a pre-warning, this episode did not come without it’s technical difficulties. Towards the very end of our conversation my laptop died a sudden death only to be revived again by the incredible invention of a charger. My apologies for the abrupt stop and restart of our conversation at the end but I was over the moon that we hadn’t lost our conversation completely cos this is a good one. Thanks again to Madeline and to you for listening.

Lynsey is from Scotland and moved to Ireland three years ago to work as a brewer. We get into lots of different topics in this podcast varying from her travels around the world, the different processes and techniques used in beer making, and what life is like working as a female brewer in a traditionally male working environment. She’s great fun, a role model for her profession and best of all, despite her travels all around the world, has maintained her Scottish wit and sense of humour. Keep listening till the end to hear lots of different pub recommendations in Dublin as well. Links to places mentioned are in the description of this episode. Thanks to all who are listening - we love getting your messages of support so please do continue to reach out to us on instagram - remember that for those in Dublin we have live podcasts every Monday and if you would like to come to one of them, just send us a quick message on Instagram and we’ll send you the details.https://www.thebigromance.ie/https://www.fidelitybar.ie/https://www.whiplashbeer.com/https://www.frankryans.com/https://thecircular.ie/https://www.luckys.ie/https://www.themagnet.ie/https://onthebackpage.com/

Vanesa moved to Dublin 8 years ago from her hometown just outside of Barcelona. We chat about why she decided to come to Ireland and more importantly what has stayed her here for so long. Throughout the conversation we go into a bit more detail on the different stages of her life and how she is learning to discover herself. She talks about learning to unlearn and pushing herself to grow as a person. Something which I think we can all learn fro Vanesa is that life is not about the cliched version of the destination nor the journey, but is defined purely by the people or community you are surrounded by. Thanks so much for listening guys. Remember that sharing this podcast with a friend or giving us a quick rating or review is what keeps the fire alive for us and makes all the work really worthwhile. We really really appreciate your support.

At long last we had our first Argentinian on the podcast. Laura has travelled around and lived in quite a few places, including Italy, Australia and Denmark before she ended up settling here in Dublin…partly because of the pandemic but mostly because she has now come to call the City her home. We chat about the struggle of finding your internal home and what we do to try and achieve that, World Cup madness, mate and much more.Thank you for listening guys. If you’re feeling generous we’d really appreciate it if you could share this podcast with a friend or give us a rating. It makes all the difference.Cafe mentioned: It’s a Trap - instagram.com/its_a__trap_/Breathing workshop mentioned: instagram.com/deepbreath.ie/

Last night we had our first ever live podcast. It’s hard to believe that this podcast has even gotten to the point where we could do something like this but the stars aligned and a lot of different people helped us and made it happen for us. So a big thanks to them and to all the people who came along to the show. It was great fun and the good news is, it’ll be the same again next week as we look to try and do the live podcasts on a weekly basis. The night wasn’t without it’s stereotypical ‘opening night’ problems. Originally we had planned on putting the podcast out on YouTube live as well, but apparently you need to give YouTube 24 hours notice before you do your first live on your channel. Who knew? I didn’t. We also had a couple of lads in the background doing their thing playing boardgames. We had the room booked for the evening but we decided to let them in as the room is really big and we didn’t think our mics would pick them up. Once again, wrong again, so apologies for any background noise you hear during this episode.Apart from all that, our guest Malinda was absolutely wonderful and our live audience were even better! Malinda is a professional stand-up comic from Sri Lanka based out of Dublin. We talk about the Dublin comedy scene, realities of being a professional artist, seagulls, North Face jackets and much much more.Malinda runs the N2O comedy show which is in The Black Sheep on Capel Street on Friday and Saturday night. We couldn’t recommend it more. Check out the link in the description of this episode.www.eventbrite.ie/o/n2o-comedy-club-dublin-36652764853

Claudia has come all the way from Italy to live in Ireland for a few years. She arrived to Dublin four months ago so she is able to give us a newcomer’s perspective on the City. We chat about her opinion on work culture in Ireland, what she likes to do here in her spare time and how she is going about making new friends and new connections in the City.I have to say I really admire her bravery to come and talk to us, in her second language, after only four months of being in Dublin. Thanks a mill for joining us on the podcast Claudia, and to you the listener, I can’t express enough how grateful we are for your support.
