Edmund Burke said, "Those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it." Pharaoh did that with the Isarelites. He failed to understand the role Joseph and the Israelites played in the success of his nation and rather than recognizing them as assets to his kingdom, he thought they were a blight on the land. Pharaoh, instead of using the Israelites for the blessings they could bring to his nation made the fatal error of trying to destroy them. Other leaders through the centuries have tried to destroy God's people, but none have or will succeed. They are his chosen people.

Moses and Aaron weren't sure about their ability to persuade Pharaoh. They doubted they could do what God asked. So did the disciples. So did Noah. So did a lot of those who ended up doing some incredible things for God. It's okay to have doubts sometimes. The difference between those who succeed and those who don't usually isn't about doubt. Many of those who succeeded doubted sometimes. The difference is they carried on anyway. They continued to do what God told them to do. They were more confident in God than in their doubts.

The first time God told his name to man, he told it to Moses at the burning bush. Until then, no word existed for the immediate present, now, because it doesn’t exist. The present you imagine is either the past or the future, the immediate present never exists...except in the personal presence of God. He is not bound by time or space and so he does the impossible. If God can exist in the present when no one or nothing else can, he can take care of the past and future, too. Trust him.

God can work his will in ways you cannot see. None of the players in the drama of Exodus 2 understood their part as it unfolded. But they played their parts because God moved in their hearts. Moses’ mother wanted desperately to save her son and did it the only way she could think might work. Pharaoh’s daughter saw enough death. She desired to see life and took compassion on this one child on this one day. Miriam stood by faithfully watching over her brother. God's plans will happen as he foretells them.

Joseph understood forgiveness. He could have shown anger and bitterness toward Potiphar’s wife for falsely accusing him. Instead, he forgave her and became responsible for caring for all his fellow prisoners under the direction of the captain of the prison guard.
Joseph could have complained about the cupbearer who forgot him for two years after he was restored to his position with Pharaoh according to the dream Joseph interpreted for him. Instead, he continued to patiently carry out the duties the captain of the guard gave him each day. He forgave the cupbearer long before the cupbearer remembered his oversight and told Pharaoh about one who could interpret the dreams I give men from time to time. Joseph understood the power of forgiveness.

Many people know about what is commonly called Jesus’ Triumphal Entry into the city of Jerusalem the last week of His life. Many of those who think Him only a prophet think He acted according to scripture only because of His deep study of the scriptures. They don’t believe He was truly God incarnate. They don’t look at the details of the stories recorded about Him to understand He wasn’t just any man or any prophet.
The details show He was more than a man. The detail also show God can do incredible things with what we might consider little things. God can take the small things of life and turn them into the items that become the springboard for mighty miracles or the living proof that He is who He says He is.

God never tires of hearing our prayers. Whether for needs, to praise him, to share our successes or failures, our joys or sorrows. He wants to hear from us. God can handle every emotion we can express. He can even handle our anger. He can even take our anger with him. God just want us to talk to him. That's how we build a relationship with him. The Psalms are full of emotion shared in songs and prayers like the one penned in chapter 5. It's a great example of how David learns his greatest need is his relationship with God.

We often view Joseph's life as full of trouble in his early years. We don't stop to think God used all of those events to prepare him for the task he planned for him. Joseph's mouth got him in trouble, but as he learned to listen instead of talk and understand that God is responsible for putting people into position and taking them out of them, he became an important asset to God. Joseph went from prisoner to Pharaoh's right-hand man in one fell swoop. Not because of his ability, but because he learned to lean on God.

Jesus told a lot of stories to help us get our priorities straight. The parable of the prodigal son gives us many different lessons from the characters involved. But one important lesson from the short story he told on the hillside that day tells us we need to get our eyes set on the right home for eternity. This life is too short and temporary to waste it chasing after things that won't last.
