The words sound hard, "hate your mother, father, brothers, and sister if you're going to follow God. In comparison, your love for God will seem like hating them, but you won't. In fact, if you think about the pain Jesus caused his earthly family, it was only because he loved them. Without the suffering they went through because of his suffering, he could not become their savior anymore than he could become our savior. Love sometimes might look different for a moment, but God seems to turn all things for good. Even what looks like hate.

Jacob feared his brother, Esau, when he returned to his home. He remembered his past and when his brother came out with 400 men, he thought his past caught up with him. We all have things in our past and sometimes our present that can cause fear, but God says, we don't need fear. He will not leave us or forsake us when we need him most.

No one knows when the master will come back. Many thought he would come in their lifetime. They still do. But we never know when life will end. Jesus tells a parable to his followers to remind them of the urgency of staying prepared because of the nearness of the persecution and immediacy of his death and some of their own. We too must be prepared because we never know when he will return. Only the Father knows when Christ will come back to receive his bride.

God doesn't want flowery words or long orations when we talk to him. He just wants us to have a conversation with him to build a relationship with him. Talk to him like you do a friend. Share your hurts, your successes, your joys and sorrows. Make prayer an integral part of your life. Jesus taught us how by example and by instruction. It's not hard. It just means remembering who is important in your life and taking time to talk to him.

The Beatles got the words right, but the concept wrong. We misuse and misunderstand love today. Love is an action demonstrated to the unlovable. Doing good for those who do not deserve it. When Jesus healed the sick, gave hope to the hopeless, cleared the temple, sacrificed himself for us. None of us deserved it. He expressed his love for us in doing those things. His love was more than words. His love expressed itself in concrete actions for others.

Many look at the feeding of the 5000 as a wonderful miracle, and it is, but it is so much more than just meeting the physical needs of the men, women and children who gathered on the mountainside that day. I saw an opportunity to feed souls, but before men can listen, their baser needs must be met. A hungry belly speaks louder than a great orator. The miracle allowed them to stay, the changed lives captivated them to want them to stay.

God never gives us more than we can handle. Abraham had an extreme test of faith only because God prepared him for it. He will test us along our Christian journey of faith, but he will never test us beyond what we can handle. He wants us to pass his tests. He wants us to live victoriously. If he thought Abraham were not up to the challenge, he would not have asked him to sacrifice his son. Listen to his words and see the confidence in his voice.

The centurion showed the Jews around Jesus and us what faith is all about. It knows no boundaries of time or space. Faith just believes God can! Whatever he needs to do, he can do it. He doesn't always do what we want him to do. We don't always know why. Job didn't. God finally restored him and he didn't know why he did that either. Through all of the his trials Job just believed, though. God asks us to do the same. Just like the centurion, God asks us to believe with the unmatched faith of the centurion and know that he will do what is best for us in every circumstance.

We get caught up in the question of judging others. Jesus sets us straight. We can see behavior, but not thoughts. Words get us tangled because of mixed meanings and understanding. Don't judge intent! Bad can mean good today. Or it can mean bad. Did that mean good? You get the point. Unless you know the context, the tone, my filter at the moment, you don't know what I said. That's how most of our language gets mixed and confused and the tensions build between people today. We think we know what was heard or said when we really have no clue. Jesus says clean up your heart first then begin to help others. Just pour our forgiveness and grace and you'll be okay.
