Claude Dallas. Most people wouldn't know that name from any other. I never heard of him until I was damn near 30, and never really listened to the story until a couple years ago. He's almost an urban legend among my wife's family and a lot of folks in northern Nevada. A polarizing figure to say the least. One of those rare occurrences, where a man who would normally be romanticized by your typical rural conservative person, runs afoul of the law and the black and white gets real grey. Murderous outlaw to some, a rugged individualist protecting his property to others. The truth I discovered was a tragic combination of unintended consequences of government intervention. I didn't do this story justice, but here's what I found in a day.
