Charles was my neighbour next-door to the family home I lived in from 5 to 12 years old. His daughter and I, being the same age, grew up playing together over the shared fence.

Recently, shortly after seeing him for the first time in years at his 70th birthday, I took him up on an offer to help me service and oil change my car. Thus ensued a few hours of chats and skimming the surface of what was evidently a lifetime packed with unique stories and perspectives.

My interviewing skills felt a bit put to the test on this one but Charles pulled through and offered up loads of entertaining stories from war stories passed down through the generations to car mechanics, life as a nomadic kite salesman and naked acting jobs as well as a decade or two of the DJ high-life with plenty more in between.

Will was one of my best mates and favourite characters in my Lake Atitlan, Guatemala chapter of life!

Initially judged by me as a loud American full of spiritual bullsh*t... his enthusiasm for my freediving offerings quickly turned me onto 'Team Will' and many fun times were had by us.

An Archetype of masculine strength on the outside embodying a spirit of care and service... Will.I.am.King stands as a representation of a new-age spiritual warrior if ever I've seen one!

Always an honour and blessing hanging out, to receive a lifetime of context in story and in such a setting was truly beautiful.

Dave and his wife Deedle (she's the real boss) run 'La Iguana Perdida' a boutique hotel meets backpacker hostel on the shores of Lake Atitlan, Guatemala. 

In late 2022 I arrived here with a backpack of my own and a declared dream of starting a Freediving School and the Iguana was where I landed.

Over the years it has been an honour to witness (and benefit) from Dave's good humour, sense of fair play, and acted-upon wisdom of how to live a decent life...

Never before had I heard most of these stories and to have it all in one consistent timeline is seriously cool. We covered his time growing up in the States, finding his place in Guatemala, a soap-opera-esque love story, felons on the run, ex-cult members and everything in between!

Thanks Dave for being you and my god was it entertaining to piece together the context behind your most excellent character!!

Tom's cafe Trece Cielos is the single best space to hang out I know of on this planet.

In my time living in Guatemala, Tom and his cafe served as a refuge for me to retreat to; A place filled with warmth, fun and abundant love.

Central to mine and everyone else's experience of this place is Tom himself. He is the best example I have hereto witnessed of balancing the free-flowing hippie side of life with the rubber-meets-the-road usefulness required to build and operate a business.

It was an honour to sit him down for a couple hours and hear his story. To place him within the context of not just the few years I've known him but the decades he has been living!

The third and final instalment of Xav, Ted and I yarning on about our trip from scenic viewpoints!!

This one will likely survive as my favourite of the three as we recount all the funny, crazy and downright dangerous experiences the trip provided.

Filmed on the summit of Guatemala’s San Pedro volcano, overlooking Lake Atitlan where I lived and built my freediving school.

A very special recording I, again, feel blessed to have out there accessible for eternity.

On a recent trip my best mates and I were hitchhiking through Guyana and got very lost in a town called Yupukari.

Oddly, there was one 'western-looking' man there who had set himself up quite nicely and we were highly intrigued.

This man was Ash.

Having grown up to follow his mother's footsteps wayyy into the wilds of Africa and South America, Ash incidentally fashioned himself into one of the continent (if not the world's) most expert wilderness guides.

We discuss the nature of his story, his 'Big Break' with the BBC, Indigenous realities and challenges, Guyana itself and plenty more.

My friends and I had envisioned getting ourselves to a remote indigenous village in the Guyanese jungle. I had hopes of recording a conversation with some locals as English is the national language.

Through a hitchhiking mishap we ended up in a very different remote indigenous village from the initially intended area. We were also not in the jungle but, instead, in the savannah!!

We were nonetheless blessed with a truly unique experience as the first backpackers in the town of Yupukari. Jose (pronounced 'Josie') invited us into his home and showed us around for just shy of a week spotting caymans, fishing piranhas and plenty more.

I love now having such a long-form capture of him to be able to look back on and better remember our time there and this very special character who facilitated it for us.

And, to anyone else, hopefully an interesting insight into the kind of character that isn't so readily accessible in the modern first-world context.

This was a properly self-indulgent recording from when we first met and landed in our Favela AirBnB in Rio for NYE 2025.

Many more of our (especially Ted's) stories that we now have saved for posterity. Xav recounted his travels thus far as we all dreamed of our travels to come.
