In this podcast, Dr. Steve Wright and Dr. Heidi McNeely discuss the history of substance use, stigma, and society's role in shaping perceptions about people who use drugs. 

Dr. Steve Wright is a residency trained family physician board certified over 40 years ago. He has been practicing addiction medicine for 34 years and medical pain management for 20 years. His interests include opioid prescribing, opioid use disorder (OUD), policy and systems of care related to addiction treatment and the prescribing of benzodiazepines. 

Dr. Heidi McNeely is a nurse researcher with over 23 years of experience. She has been focusing on the opioid crisis for the past 5 years. She has been a pedicatric clinical nurse specialist who worked on drug diversion prevention in healthcare settings. 

Terri Schreiber is your host. She is the CEO and founder of The Schreiber Research Group (TSRG), a Colorado-based nonprofit. They are a team of experts  who evaluate interventions to improve outcomes and fill knowledge gaps concerning public health policy and management through community outreach, consulting and research.

In this podcast, Lisa Trigilio and Arlene Cooke discuss the community response to stigma that is observable in their day-to-day work activities. There is also a refresher of five types of stigma that were described in Part 1. These include:

1. Self stigma: stigma that is internalized within a person
2. Anticipated stigma: when someone anticipates or expects that they will be stigmatized in a future situation. It could be a social situation or when seeking healthcare services
3. Perceived stigma: when someone questions what other people think about me. How will I be perceived that could make me feel uncomfortable.
4. Enacted stigma: this is a type of stigma that one can actually see, feel or measure. You can observe someone not being treated well because of their substance use. The treatment can be degrading and demeaning. 
5. Structural stigma: these are actions that are embedded into our laws and policies and reflect the way we as a society respond to individuals who use substances. This can be especially difficult becuase it can take years and years to shift or move perceptions. 

Lisa Trigilio is the Program Director from Fort Lyon, a Supportive Residential Community that provides recovery oriented transitional housing to people experiencing homelessness and Arlene Cooke from the Otero County Health Department.  

Arlene Cooke is a Program Director and Peer Recovery Support Specialist with the Otero County Health Department focusing on the substance use crisis in Otero, Crowley, and Bent counties in SE Colorado.

This includes discussing person first language, SAMHSA's Four Pillars of Recovery: Health, Home, Purpose and Community and recovery friendly workplaces.
