Most of us, especially in high school, have been asked what we want to be when we grow up. An exercise that's quite common is to ask yourself what would you do if you knew you couldn't fail. It's aimed to take away the pressure. But the problem is that it edges us towards something glamorous  that feeds our ego because of course, we can't fail. This is problematic as Seth Godin points out. We need to alter this question and instead ask what would you do if you knew you'd fail. This simple shift completely changes the gravity of the question and really defines your purpose once you know the answer. This is the notion I explore with this episode. In the business world, I've seen a lot of people stack meetings back to back to back. Heck, I've done it too. The thinking is that it's the most efficient method. Because of this, I present to you two simple things you can do to have meetings be more effective: schedule time to prep mentally before starting the meeting and schedule time afterwards to decompress. Last week had most Americans glued to the TV as we awaited election results. Yet in spite of that anxiousness, I was able to be creative by setting aside a few hours to work on my script. There's a very negative side to social media for sure. And it needs to be addressed. However, you also have autonomy and you have to start using it. At the end of the day, social media is what YOU make it. You want to see more things that educate and enhance your life? Follow/like/share those posts more. Stop engaging with things you don't want to engage with. It can really be that simple. I've experienced it firsthand where I lacked intent with my social media. Then I defined how I'd like social media to be for me and I engineered it that way. So I implore you to do the same. I challenge you to find a "mentor" that suits you. In this I mean it's someone who exemplifies your ideals. In order to do that, you must first define YOUR basis for success. Once you do that, then you can seek someone who showcases that on a day to day level. And the good news is with so many books, podcasts, documentaries, social media, etc it's easier than ever to "get a mentor". Some of mine include Marie Forleo, Tim Ferriss, Simon Sinek, Ryan Holiday, Jemele Hill and Yoga Girl. If you'd like to consider me a mentor, fantastic. If not, no worries. I've come to learn that the messenger is just as important as the message and if I'm not the one for you then find someone who is. I sincerely mean that. I see and meet a lot of people who say they want to exemplify some virtue but the fact is that when presented with an opportunity they don't take it. That's because they don't recognize the fact that any virtue can only be displayed through action, not by talking or wishing it. Take courage. If you want to be courageous, you have to in essence overcome dangerous things. And if that's truly your desire, life will give you those opportunities. It's up to you to see them and take them.
