  • When Life Doesn’t Go as Planned: Real Conversations About Aging and Care

In this episode of A Place for Seniors, we sit down with Kevin Craig of S4 Real Estate, whose journey into working with seniors didn’t start as a plan, it started with a life-changing moment.

Kevin shares the deeply personal story of his parents, who believed they had everything prepared. With organized estate plans, financials, and instructions carefully stored away, it seemed like nothing had been left undone. But life had other plans.

After his father unexpectedly passed away, Kevin was suddenly thrust into a role he and so many adult children—are not prepared for. Living in Arizona while his mother was in Northern California, he found himself navigating medical decisions, legal responsibilities, and emotional realities all at once, with no roadmap and no prior experience.

As his mother faced serious health challenges, Kevin quickly realized how overwhelming the system can be. From trying to communicate with hospitals to searching for the right support, he discovered a major gap: there are resources available but most families don’t know what they’re called, where to find them, or who they can trust.

This experience became the catalyst for everything he does today.

Now working closely with seniors and their families, Kevin helps guide people through one of the most complex transitions of their lives combining real estate expertise with compassion, understanding, and firsthand experience.

Together, we explore what it really means to step into decision-making for a parent, why so many families feel unprepared, and how having the right support can make all the difference.

Today, Kevin’s mother is 94 years old, thriving in assisted living just minutes from his home, a powerful reminder that even in the most overwhelming moments, the right decisions can lead to better outcomes.

This episode is a must-listen for anyone who has aging parents, is navigating care decisions, or wants to be better prepared for what’s ahead.

  • Navigating Senior Living Options: What Families Need to Know

In this episode of A Place for Seniors, we sit down with Laura Cohen, Executive Director and Owner of Bella Vita Senior Homes, a boutique residential care model serving families across the Valley since 2019. With three thoughtfully designed homes, Laura has created a care experience that prioritizes dignity, privacy, and truly personalized attention offering an alternative to large, institutional-style facilities.

Laura’s journey into senior care began with a deeply personal experience—her mother. Coming from a background in mortgage and real estate, Laura understood the importance of making informed decisions. But when her mother needed care, she quickly realized something many families face: love alone isn’t enough. Providing safe, effective care requires training, structure, and the right environment.

As she began researching options, Laura discovered how overwhelming the senior living landscape can be. While large-scale facilities may work for some, she knew they weren’t the right fit for her mom. The idea of navigating a 100+ resident community felt impersonal and unrealistic for her needs.

That realization led Laura to a different path.

Bella Vita Senior Homes was built on the belief that smaller environments create better outcomes. Each home is intentionally designed with just 10 residents, all with private rooms and bathrooms, allowing for a higher level of care, comfort, and connection. Residents aren’t just cared for—they are known, heard, and part of a close-knit community where meals are shared, relationships are built, and daily life feels meaningful.

Throughout the episode, Laura speaks candidly about one of the most difficult parts of this journey—recognizing when a loved one needs help. As adult children, we often don’t see our parents as aging, making these decisions emotional and complex.

Laura also shares her deep commitment to residents living with Parkinson’s disease. After noticing a growing need within her homes, she immersed herself in education and became actively involved with the Parkinson Foundation. Her hands-on, intentional approach ensures that residents receive not only care—but the right care tailored to their condition.

At its core, Bella Vita is more than a senior living option, it’s a philosophy of care rooted in compassion, choice, and creating a true sense of home.

This episode offers an honest, insightful look into navigating senior care decisions—and why finding the right environment can completely transform a loved one’s quality of life.
