August 08, 2026 Episode 64: Sins of the Father
As we finish up the "Dormancy" section of The Seed Keeper by Diane Wilson, we find ourselves getting caught up in the beauty of the prose and the layered sadness described therein. Rosalie eventually has to make a choice about her identity and her life, and often it seems like she doesn't have any options. Similarly, we learn a little bit about the U. S. - Dakota War of 1862, and how the indigenous nations also felt as if they were backed into a corner with limited choices, if any at all. The choice is to survive, but sometimes that survival comes at the cost of who you are. As promised, this book gets VERY heavy very quickly. For those of you that struggle to listen to people cry, Sara is trying her best to keep it together, but this will definitely not be the last time she cries during this book (sorry!)

As we continue reading The Seed Keeper by Diane Wilson, we're struck with not only the beauty of her words, but also with the deep impact of her meaning. This book is meant to be uncomfortable, and it's not shying away one bit from the difficult topics. We are so here for it! There's so much to dig into and unpack, and we're not sure where to start, other than to just keep reading. While nothing much really happens, at the same time, A LOT happens. We can already tell that The Seed Keeper will stick with us for a while.

This season we are reading The Seed Keeper by Diane Wilson, and as historical fiction tends to be, it's pretty heavy-- even in this first episode. Please be advised that in this first episode alone there is mention of suicide contemplation, sexual assault, substance abuse, and generational trauma. This isn't going to be an easy read, but it is of course a necessary read. Come for the heartbreak, stay for the beautiful prose, and try not to feel too helpless.

It was a difficult read for all of the right reasons, but we feel like we've reflected enough on how society hasn't really changed at all since 1692, 1953, or even 2015. We're tired and frustrated.

The Crucible by Arthur Miller continues to hit harder and be ever more relevant to not only the scary moments of history, but of our everyday lives. What is the point in engaging in a debate if you will not change your mind? If it's your way or the high way? What is the point of honesty if it's punished? While none of the characters are particularly loveable, their struggle is real and we are getting nervous. We think we know how this story ends.
