  • #390 Hasford' THE NINTH CONFIGURATION (1980)

EPISODE #390-- Today we tackle the meta-physical farce (and Mark Kermode favorite), THE NINTH CONFIGURAITON from William Peter Blatty (staring Stacy Keach, Scott Wilson, and Moses Gunn). It's a good one. Good movie, available for free in a ton of different places. Go check it out!

We also talk about GUNDAMN: 08th MS TEAM, MOON, Ridley Scott's HOUSE OF GUCCI (2021), and MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE: DEAD RECKONING: PART ONE (2023), which kind of sucks, so spoiler alert there.

  • #389 Stephenson's JOHNNY MNEMONIC (1995)

EPISODE #389-- 1995 was a good year for cyberpunk. There was Hackers, Sneakers, Ghost in the Shell, and, of course, JOHNNY MNEMONIC, directed by Robert Longo and staring none-other than John Wick himself, Keanu Reeves. It's a movie that people talk about for a reason. Despite its distinct problems, it still has stuff in it that is worth experiencing. Come with as we untangle this schlock masterpiece.

We also talk about Michael Cimino's HEAVEN'S GATE (1980) on the Criterion Collection, BATTLE ROYALE (2000) which is free all over the place, Jordan Peele's NOPE (2022), and Wes Anderson's ASTEROID CITY (2023), again, which is still in theaters, so go check it out.

  • #388 Hesse's CABARET (1972)

EPISODE #388-- We belatedly round out Pride Month with an examination of Bob Fosse's complex musical masterpiece and ode to a bygone era, CABARET (1972, starting Liza Minnelli and Michael York).

It's a great movie and a great episode.

We also talk about decidedly straight films, Sergio Leone's THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY (1968), John Woo's MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2 (2000), Wes Anderson's ASTEROID CITY (2023 and in theaters now!), Philip Falardeau's CHUCK (2014), and Istvan Szabo's MEPHISTO (1981). Lots of good stuff here.

EPISODE #387-- We carry on with Pride Month, this time tackling the classic gender-bending musical comedy, VICTOR/VICTORIA (1982), written and directed by Blake Edwards. It's a good one. A good movie and a good episode.

  • #386 Capote's MISHIMA: A LIFE IN FOUR CHAPTERS (1985)

EPISODE #386-- Carrying on our celebration of Pride Month, we tackle the infamous biopic from Paul Schrader, MISHIMA: A LIFE IN FOUR CHAPTERS from 1985. With a score by Phillip Glass and staring Ken Ogata. It's a heck of a film. Check it out on Criterion and/or HBO Max.

We also talk about another Paul Schrader flick THE YAKUZA (1974), as well as AVATAR: THE WAY OF WATER (2022), TOKYO GODFATHERS (2003), DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: HONOR AMONG THIEVES (2022), and SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE (2023). A big ep. A good ep. Listen to it.

  • #385 Truman Capote's ROPE (1948)

EPISODE #385-- For today's episode of the show, we decided to ring in Pride Month the only way we know how: By watching a couple of gay wusses try to get away with murder. That's right, today we take on Alfred Hitchcock's ROPE.

We also talk MATANGO (from 1963, which is available on Tubi), James Cameron's TITANIC (1997), BUS STOP (1956), NIGHTMOVES (from 1975 on Criterion Channel, among other places), and finally FOREIGN CORRESPONDANT.

It's a big episode and it's a good one! Check it out!

  • #384 Steven King's DUEL (1971)

EPISODE #384-- We delve back into the world of the Hollywood Brats with Steven Spielberg's early masterpiece, DUEL from 1971. Starring none other than Gunsmoke's own Dennis Weaver and based on a Ray Matheson short story, if you haven't seen this yet, you're missing out.

We also talk about THE BIRDCAGE (1996), SEVERANCE (2022) on Apple+ or whatever it's called, and MASTER GARDENER (2023). Bunch of good ones in there. Something for everybody.
