It’s not every day that a town of just six thousand people becomes known for so many strange and unlikely things.

Snowflake, Arizona, named after Erastus Snow and William Flake, is often described as the most Mormon town west of the Pecos. But in sharp contrast to its religious roots, it is also home to one of the largest cannabis cultivation operations in the country. It is the place where Travis Walton famously claimed he was abducted by a UFO in 1975, a story that would later become a bestselling book and the 1993 film Fire in the Sky. It is even home to an off-grid community of people who believe they suffer from Multiple Chemical Sensitivity and Electromagnetic Sensitivity, living together without modern technology.

But what many people do not realize is that Snowflake is also a place where people seem to disappear. In 2003, a beloved grandmother and longtime town mail carrier, just months away from retirement, vanished without a trace, as if she simply stepped out of her life and was never seen again. What makes her disappearance even more unsettling is that just two years earlier, one of her neighbors disappeared under strikingly similar circumstances.

More than twenty years later, this small town is still without answers and still haunted by the mystery of those who never came home.

“There is no actual physical injury, is there, other than some bruising? I am not suggesting that bruising is nice, but there is no disfigurement. There are no broken bones. There are no serious physical injuries, are there?”

Those words were spoken by Criminal Court Judge Lorin Duckman at a bail hearing for the man who had been relentlessly stalking and abusing Galina Komar. Galina was present in the courtroom that day, forced to listen as the severity of what had been done to her was minimized. At one point she would note that the judge was more concerned about the placement of her stalker’s dog than he was about her life. Three weeks later, she would be dead. With January marking National Stalking Awareness Month, this episode does not only revisit the injustice of Galina’s case, it examines the ripple effects her murder had across New York City, exposing deep failures in how stalking and domestic violence were treated at the time. Galina’s death set off political infighting at the highest levels, and as the debate played out, a grim pattern continued to emerge: women being targeted by former partners kept being killed.

I want to be transparent about this case from the start. While it is technically unsolved, there is a strong and consistent understanding of who is responsible. This is less a whodunit and more an opportunity to walk through our criminal justice system and examine how, over the course of decades, one man was able to manipulate outcomes in his favor. Shorter sentencing, public sympathy, and ultimately a lack of meaningful consequences. It is also a reminder that even when answers seem to form almost immediately, accountability and justice can remain painfully out of reach. One reality that is not always discussed in the true crime space is that families often know, deep down, who is responsible. They are left to live with that certainty while watching that person remain free. Today I am sharing a case like that. Because even when a case is positioned to never be officially solved, the identities of the victims are not erased. Their lives mattered, and their story still deserves to be told.

A fifth grader comes home from school in 1991 expecting to see his mother but instead is greeted by an empty home and a terrifying scene. Everything from the home pointed to foul play for the mother. Other clues made it seem like aspects had been staged to make the scene look like something that it wasn’t. On the day of Deborah’s disappearance, she was supposed to be meeting with her husband to finalize their divorce. And while that may seem like suspicious timing, he has always maintained his innocence and nobody has ever been charged in her case and her body has never been found. In the years after her disappearance, her mother would tell the papers that she would hear the voice of her daughter telling her not to give up. And with her mothers passing, that quest has been passed down to her brothers. Answers in Deborah’s case are long overdue, so that a family and community can heal.

In September of 1968, a young saleswoman named Carol was traveling through Indiana, selling encyclopedias for a company based in Indianapolis. She was part of a small crew made up of another black woman and two white men. That day, their route brought them to Martinsville, Indiana, a town that was already known among Black travelers as a dangerous place to be. As the term was better adopted over the years, it would be known as a sundown town. 
That evening, Carol began facing harassment. As the evening wore on, she tried to seek help, reaching out to locals and even to police. But by the time night was over, Carol would be dead, brutally attacked at one of the town’s main intersections. Two men were sought as suspects in her murder. And through the years many would be questioned as pressure mounted. Eventually one suspect would be captured. The other was never identified. And some wonder if they got it right. Her story is a stark reminder of the very real dangers Black Americans faced while doing ordinary, everyday things during the civil rights era. It is also a sobering reminder that the echoes of those dangers have not disappeared. And even now, decades later, there are people who know exactly what happened to Carol that night. People who still have the opportunity to come forward and give her loved ones the truth they have been denied for far too long.

In January of 2002, a college student is home in Texas for winter break, just days away from returning to school. Like she does nearly every morning, the avid runner laces up her shoes, grabs her Walkman, and heads out on her familiar four-mile route through her family’s quiet subdivision. A treasured pediatrician from Tennessee spends the night out at an NBA basketball game. She calls her mom from the game and mentions to her that she isn’t feeling well. After she gets home, she hosts a couple of girlfriends at her place to finish out the evening as a quiet night in before heading to bed. What happens to her after they leave her home is a mystery, but her family began to worry when she wasn’t around early the next morning to babysit her sister’s children, something she was scheduled to do and would never miss. In the days following, alarming clues would point to her meeting with foul play and circumstantial evidence would cast suspicion and shift public opinion on those closest to her. Still, almost everything in her case is surrounded by mystery. She was known to love jigsaw puzzles, meticulously working on them and then gluing and framing the finished product to display.  A puzzle seems like the perfect metaphor for this case, with little pieces everywhere, that all must fit together somehow but that authorities and her loved ones have not been able to connect at this point. Is the mysterious phone call to her house at 1:58 AM the missing piece?

As of November 24th, 2025 a suspect was confirmed in the case with advanced DNA evidence and NHSP Closed the case. Rest Peacefully, Judy. The truth is known. 

A young woman is living in a small Concord, New Hampshire apartment with her husband and their little boy. Their marriage is rocky, and he comes and goes often, leaving Judy alone with their toddler. During those stretches, she was said to have been uneasy and fearful, convinced someone might break in. Neighbors didn’t quite understand her worry until one summer day in 1975, when Judy was found dead inside her apartment. In the decades since, investigators have looked closely at several suspects, some of whom have since passed away. Yet nearly fifty years later, hope remains that modern technology might finally reveal the truth about who killed Judy.

On a Tuesday morning in late November of 1981, a newlywed met up with a man she thought was purchasing her wedding dress from her. She was scraping together any cash she could for a down payment on a house. Little did she know, the man had no intention of buying her dress. “I don’t know if it is a joke or not. The timer is not ticking or anything, but if it is a joke, it is a very poor one. I would like someone to come over and look at it please.” Those were some of the last words Andrew Puskas ever spoke to a Middlesex, New Jersey police officer. Moments later, his home exploded, killing both Andrew and his wife and stunning an entire community.

The Puskas family was quiet. Middle class. Ordinary in all the ways that usually keep people safe. They had no known enemies, no ongoing disputes, nothing that would make them a target.
