Send us a textDarwin Vest was a bit of a local celebrity in Idaho Falls. He was known locally as Spider Man because of his passion for studying spiders (and snakes, and other creatures that many of us run away from). His biggest claim to fame was identifying and naming the Hobo Spider that had made its way into homes all over the Pacific Northwest. He was an expert at studying venom in snakes, spiders, and plants and had been used as an expert on these topics all over the country, from college lecture halls to court rooms. In June of 1999, he had secured a deal to sell his Hobo Spider Trap invention and was celebrating at his weekly trivia night at his favorite local bar with friends. But after he left the bar that night, he stepped into the darkness never to be seen again. Did Darwin accidentally fall into the Snake River or did he meet with foul play?

Send us a textA teen is babysitting a young boy on a stormy March night in 1950. All is going according to plan until a frantic call comes in to police with a woman screaming, only able to yell "come quick!"
Unable to trace the call, police have to hope she just calls back. But she wouldn't.
The next call would be from the parents of the little boy who return to find their son unharmed but the babysitter brutally murdered in the living room.
A recent series of sexual assaults in the neighborhood  seemed to be resolved when a young man was put behind bars. But now this new attack questioned everything the community thought about not only the recent assaults, but a murder that a man had been executed for in 1946.
This case serves as the inspiration for the popular "Babysitter" or "Babysitter and the Man Upstairs" urban legend, but the actual story is so much more sad and tragic than a story trope.
For this 30th episode of the podcast, I discuss the misguided nostalgia our society has for the 1950's and the botched police work that led to racial profiling and the likelihood of a white man getting away with a murder.

Send us a textA woman is about to make her final vows as a nun and is taking part in a spiritual retreat on Convent grounds to pray about her decision. One morning, she grabbed an apple and her Bible and walked up a hill less than 100 yards away from the Retreat House to sit on a bench and pray. Just hours later, her lifeless body would be discovered 40 feet away from that overturned bench. The brutal sexual assault and murder of a nun in a sacred religious space would spark fear and outrage. Nearly 50 years have passed, but thanks to carefully preserved DNA evidence, her case may finally soon get answers.

Send us a textA mother arrives home where her 19-year-old daughter and 18 month old grandson are staying with her. She expects the house to be empty because her daughter is supposed to be at work and her grandson to the babysitters. But when she arrives home, she see's her daughter's car still in the driveway. Even more puzzling, the house is locked from the inside. Confusion turns to concern when she hears her grandson crying in the home and her daughter doesn't answer the door. After forcing her way into the home, she finds her grandson unharmed but no sign of her daughter. This case has gone on a roller-coaster of leads, but still remains one of the most confusing and bizarre cases the Quad City Region has ever seen.

Send us a textA nurse works the overnight shift and then drives home to her house on a dead-end dirt road. She calls her mother and husband to let them know she made it home safe, and then crawls into bed to sleep. That would be the last time anyone would hear from her again. When her husband and children arrived home they would find signs of a violent struggle in the house, but Melinda was nowhere to be found. Police suspect foul play immediately and think she was attacked while sleeping and abducted from the home. Investigators looked into multiple serial killers operating within driving distance of her home at the time, including the infamous Baton Rouge Serial Killer - Derrick Todd Lee. But many local people believe the answer is right in their small town and that people out there know what happened to Melinda. Now is the time to come forward.
