James “JP” Cargle took what he wanted from others. He was a drug dealer, a pimp, and a rotten excuse for a human being. I hate to say that about another person. The story I have for you today is about a famous horse. A Thoroughbred named Alydar. It‘s also a story of murder, of a killing. But not in the traditional sense. As with many crimes, it concerns money and greed. It’s also a story of lies and financial pressure. Was the death an accident? Or was it intentional? In episode 26. A Death at Calumet Farms, I speak with Fred Kray.
Fred M. Kray is a former trial lawyer specializing in animal law and won the American Bar Association’s Excellence in the Advancement of Animal Law Award in 2016. He has lectured on the subject and coauthored an article for American Jurisprudence Proof of Facts. His love for Alydar started when he watched the horse run in the 1978 Flamingo Stakes. He spent four years investigating Alydar’s death. Kray lives in Gainesville, Florida, with his wife and six dogs.

After 20 years in the hedge fund and private equity industry, Mark was sent to federal prison for securities fraud. Lost Generation writer F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote, “There are no second acts in American lives.” But while this may be a story of fraud and theft, it’s also a story of redemption—a story of second chances. In episode 25. A Study in Securities Fraud, I speak with Mark Varacchi.
Mark Varacchi has over 20 years of experience in the hedge fund and private equity industry. In 2017, he was charged with securities fraud. Mark took full responsibility and worked with the government to make restitution.
After 15 months in federal prison, he reevaluated his priorities. He has since founded the Federal Prison Consultancy, which prepares clients and their families for incarceration. He has a Bachelor of Science in finance and now speaks to compliance and financial professionals about fraud, compliance, and ethics.

Mauricio Gonzalez was selling eggs in Jalisco, Mexico when Francisco “El Blanco” Rivera arrived. He put a gun to Mauricio’s head and told him that Mauricio’s wife, Catalina, now belonged to Francisco. Mauricio was told to leave town, or he’d be killed. Going to the police was not an option because Francisco was the local boss of the Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generacion – the local Mexican drug cartel. And he wanted Mauricio’s wife. In episode 24. The Drug Cartel Kidnapping of Mauricio Gonzalez, I speak with Daniel Cotter.
Daniel Cotter is a Partner at Dickinson Wright PLLC, where he practices in a variety of areas of corporate law and litigation. He served as President of The Chicago Bar Association for the 2014-2015 bar year and is the former Chair of The Young Lawyers Section of The CBA.
