Tomorrow's the first day of school. This day is usually an exciting time when you wear a new outfit, meet parents for the first time and see how the children have grown over the summer. It's going to be a little different tomorrow.

We begin with distance learning exclusively in my school district and county. I didn't know what I wanted to say to my teachers to encourage them, be inspiring, and somehow take this load from their shoulders. There has been a lot of concern, perfectionism, frustration, and overload.

Then I received a group text from one of my teachers that says it better than I ever could. "Let's allow this school year to be awesome. Please don't throw away or don't throw a label or judgment on it before it begins. It may just surprise us in a big, beautiful way."

I love this quote and intention. Big and beautiful anything demands strategies and skills. Here are seven things to do that will make these first few weeks of school awesome.

Here we go! We are launching school on line. It's going to be really easy to focus on the technology, to focus on the pedagogy, to focus on the lessons, the assessment data, but you know, better than I, the most important part is building those relationships with our students. If they don't think, or they don't know that you care, they will not care about school. You guys rock the instruction. Let's talk a little bit about relationships.

Opening school is a lot like labor and giving birth.  Very stressful in the beginning, but so worth the outcome.  To help with the stress, I decided to create a podcast episode with jokes to lift your spirits.  Laughing is a cure for whatever ails you by releasing dopamine into the brain and boosting the immune system.

My husband describes me as someone as serious as a heart attack.  I tend to overwork and overthink, thus missing some of the joys in my life.  It was good to tell some jokes!

This is the wildest time in education filled with uncertainty, fear, and distance.  Due to a virus, our educational world is turned upside down. Educators are being asked to build the airplane while in flight.  It is a crazy-making time, to say the least!

This episode will provide tools to help with some of the anxiety and stress.  These are tools that many teachers and myself use to keep our heads in the game.

The first resource is about using our hands to get present and then there is a technique taught called 5,4,3,2,1, to bring calm so teachers can be there best in and out of the classroom.  A great tool to teach kiddos, also.

Today is also the day many Californians learn that school will open with long-distance learning.  There is a bit of commentary about this scenario.

A disclaimer:  It took me forever to create this as the learning curve is about 90 degrees.  So the reference to five weeks lets you know when I started on this project.
