Hands up who hasn’t seen Beyonce’s Black Is King extended (to 90 minutes) video? It’s the visual component of her new album, and it’s an exhausting trip around the world in 60+ costume changes, full of images of female empowerment, nurturing male masculinity, and reclaiming one’s African roots.

The costumes are stunning, the scenery spectacular, the songs pretty average for Beyonce, but it’s an interesting diversion, and did I mention the costumes?

Song Of The Week: Hard 2 Forget by VINCINT. He’s a Philadelphia born, LA based singer and finalist on the singing shoe The Four (never heard of it). Praised by Billboard as a legend in the making, and considered one of our generation’s greatest vocalists by Paper magazine, he sings a wonderful style of heartbreak dance music. Definitely one to watch.

Check out the live production now streaming on youtube, of the Broadway show “The Nance” starring Nathan Lane.  This was a new play in 2013, about a 1930’s gay burlesque comedian, looking for love in NYC. Not an easy thing in those days because of it’s illegality, the constant fear of police stings and raids. What you’d call a bittersweet story, but brilliantly staged, alternating between his apartment and the burlesque show. Excellent performances from all concerned. Not to be missed by fans of the genres i.e. gay themed theatre and burlesque.         

                                                                       

Song Of The Week: Ethan with ’Til Morning. A New Zealander, now based in Sydney but back in New Zealand at the moment because of this COVID19 business. Anyway, this is a sweet piece of prp/r&b edm, makes for relaxed listening, and isn’t that what we need now?

Interesting Things To Do

Yesterday we watched a production of Carousel from Lincoln Centre New York. It had basic sets but a full orchestra, much like the Production Company shows, but the cast and orchestra were both excellent, and this is a show that doesn’t get revived often (though I did see a spectacular production on Broadway in 2018). It’s a fairly dark musical, but there are some great songs such as If I Loved You, June Is Busting Out All Over and You’ll Never Walk Alone. It’s available on Youtube.

Today we watched the National Theatre Live production of Amadeus. Truly demented and truly amazing, it was at once annoying and uncomfortable and then transcendent and uplifting. Not for everybody, because my husband and a close friend both gave up on it, but I was amply rewarded by  a little perseverance. The performances by the lead actors were all wonderful, and full credit to the orchestra and chorus for performances mainly on the go. Can’t wait to see what next weeks theatrical gem will be. Interesting Things To Do

This week we watched Tom Hank’s new movie Greyhound. For lovers of war films this would be manna from heaven. It centres around Tom Hanks as captain of a ship assigned to lead an allied convoy across the Atlantic during WW2. The battle is between them and the German U-boats. Not much character development but lots of action extremely well presented on screen.

Song Of The Week: Outta this world from Sarah Saint James. She’s a proud member of there LGBTIQ+ community from Adelaide, and the song is a catchy tune with a slow groove, and a cute lo-fi video. Local artist makes darn good music.

This week we watched Hamilton The Musical performed live in 2016 on one of the streaming services. Not a huge rap fan, but thought we’d give it a go, having already listened to the CD and the Mixtape and didn’t mind them. So, not surprisingly, it was wonderful. The good things about watching it on home TV is that you get a better than front row view, you get to see and hear everything clearly, no giants in front of you, nobody on the mobile-bloody-phones, nobody talking or eating loudly. Worth viewing before it comes to Sydney, cos the wait could be a long one, and it’s already been in existence since 2015.

 

Song Of The Week: Scare Most Most from LA’s Trent Park. This LA based artist launched in 2011, and this new song is beautifully crafted hip pop with a clever accompanying video.

This week we watched another fundraising production of Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, but this time from the National Theatre live production @ The Bridge Theatre, and it couldn’t have been more different from the Globe Theatre production that we watched last week. I was bit dubious watching another production of the same play, but it really was spectacular. The Globe Theatre production was more traditional, and the Bridge Theatre production was more modern and quite a touch gayer. Both wonderful and compelling viewing and definitely worth seeking out.

A Midsummere Night’s Dream

Song Of The Week: Our Love Is Resistance from New York’s Fab The Duo. This song is from a brilliant new 5-track E.P. od the same name. The song really highlights the singing abilities of both members of the glam pop-rock duo, Greg Driscoll and Brendan Eprile. The video of the performance is stunning, and it makes for a wonderful Pride Anthem.

Song Of The Week: Sick of the sound from Ben Davidson. This came out a few weeks ago but it took a while for the physical copy (signed) to reach me. The original is a ballad, but I do like this Fnk’d Up version. Another of those songs that seems to make more sense in these difficult times.

Interesting Things To Do :

This week we watched a ‘National Theatre Live’ fundraiser performance on youtube of the Alan Bennett play ‘The Madness Of King George III’, starring the amazing Mark Gatiss as King George III. It was a gripping production of this fictionalised biography, watching as the actor fought mental illness during his reign, and the inability of the court to handle his condition.

I cannot stress how wonderful these productions are. We have seen many at the cinema, so it is great to still be able to watch them. We’ve also just seen A Streetcar Named Desire, starring Gillian Anderson, and This House, a brilliant study of politics in the British Houses Of Parliament. The plays change each week, and I’m looking forward to next week’s play already.
