In this episode of A Way Through, Jamie Edwards, Director of Community Relations at Archway Academy, is joined by Dr. Jeff Temple. Dr. Temple is a Professor, Licensed Psychologist, and Founding Director of the Center for Violence Prevention at the University of Texas Medical Branch. His research focuses on preventing interpersonal, community, and structural violence and has been funded through the National Institute of Justice, National Institutes of Health, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He has over 200 scholarly publications in various high-impact journals, including JAMA, JAMA Pediatrics, The Lancet Child and Adolescent Health, Pediatric the Journal of Adolescent Health.

He recently co-edited a book on adolescent dating violence, is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Primary Prevention, and is on the editorial boards of five other scientific journals. Dr. Temple recently co-chaired the Texas Task Force on Domestic Violence and served on the Board of Directors of the Texas Psychological Association. Locally, he served as the Vice President of the Galveston Independent School District Board of Trustees. His work has also been featured on CNN, New York Times, TIME Magazine, Washington Post, and even the satirical website, The Onion.

This week, John Moring, CFRE, Director of Advancement of Archway Academy, is filling in for Sasha and Jamie as he chats with Clifford Sussman, M.D. Dr. Sussman is a child and adolescent psychiatrist and psychotherapist who has been a pioneer in recognizing and treating internet gaming disorder since 2008, long before it became recognized by the World Health Organization as an official diagnosis.

As an expert consultant, he helped develop the first Digital Use Disorder track at Caron Renaissance Treatment Center. He is a frequent educator and presenter on this topic and trains other clinicians as well. As a programmer, software developer, and a gamer himself, he is dedicated to helping people achieve healthier, more balanced relationships with digital technology.

In this episode of A Way Through, Jamie Edwards, Director of Community Relations at Archway Academy, is joined by Jonathan Rea, the Clinical Director of Malaty Therapy, a group of amazing licensed therapists with offices in Houston and Kingwood. Jonathan Rea is a psychotherapist who works with adolescents and adults suffering from depression, anxiety, complex trauma, and substance abuse. Jonathan earned his bachelor's degree from the University of St. Thomas in 2007. He then spent the following ten years working with adolescents who had experienced abandonment, abuse, or neglect by their parents.

He also earned his Master of Science degree from the University of St. Thomas, specializing in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, in 2019. Jonathan offers individual therapy, family therapy, couples counseling, and group therapy. Jonathan's areas of expertise include addiction, family-of-origin work, and relationship concerns. He is particularly passionate about working with the recovery community and the LGBTQ community.

Dr. Brad Reedy is a Co-Owner and Clinical Director of Evoke Therapy Programs, an experientially-based therapy program for adolescents, young- adults, and families. Dr. Brad is also an Author, Public Speaker, and Podcast Host, and has served on the Board of the Utah Department of Child and Family Services, the Board of the National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs, and the En Garde Arts Board, a New York-based theatre company

He is also the Founder of Enlightening Relationships and provides parent coaching, couples therapy, and individual therapy. Previously, as owner and partner, Brad served as a primary therapist, Clinical Director, and Executive Director for Second Nature Wilderness Programs, helping that program become the most successful wilderness therapy program in the country.

In this episode of A Way Through, Jamie Edwards, Director of Community Relations at Archway Academy, is joined by Dean Porterfield, LPC-MHSP, NCC. Dean is Executive Director of ARCH Academy and Owner of Do Life! Counseling and Consulting, PLLC in Nashville, TN.

Dean has been with Cumberland Heights for over 11 years, has served as Executive Director of an outdoor therapeutic program for adolescent males for over ten years, and has also served on the Board of Directors of NATSAP (National Board of Therapeutic Schools and Programs), and frequently presents at national, international, and local conferences.

Dean is also an approved LPC clinical supervisor and brings over 24 years of experience working with the adolescent population and their families. He believes in a strength-based approach and understands that authentic relationships with the teens and families we serve are paramount for lasting change. Dean is also invested in combining true-tested approaches such as the Twelve steps with other evidence-based clinical intervention modalities to treat substance abuse and the underlying struggles that complement the teen’s self-medicating behavior. Dean is a sought speaker who has spoken at numerous conferences nationally and internationally throughout his career.
